Heavyweights battle for title
Club stalwart Judy Pocklington added to her titles and Nick Henwood won a heavyweight battle when Garfield Bowling Club held the men’s and women’s singles championship deciders.
In the women’s final, Judy met upand-coming bowler Sue Stansfield.
Sue won the first end, but Judy showed why she has been the champion in the past, quickly catching and passing her.
Sue didn’t cave in to the experience, however, and fought doggedly to stay in the match. After a very good game, Judy ran out the winner 25/17.
Congratulations to both women on a well-played game - Judy on her win and Sue for making the final in her first year with the club.
Judy said after the game, “I don’t think I’ll beat her next year the way she’s improving”.
The men’s final was played between last year’s champion Steve Whyte and challenger Nick Henwood. Featuring two of the best players in the club, this match shaped up as a heavyweight bout and it lived up to that hype.
Nick bolted away with three shots in the first end, but Steve pegged him back steadily with singles. The match seesawed back and forth until the score was 23/22 with Nick up.
Nick had younger legs to power home on the last end, getting the two shots he needed to make the 25 required.
It was a game well worthy of being the final. Nick was congratulated on his win and Steve for the fight he put up.
