Rent wins seven GAT awards

Off the Leash Theatre walked away with eight awards from the Gippsland

Associated Theatre Awards recently held at Danny’s the Venue, Warragul.

Seven of the eight GAT awards were for production “Rent”, staged in late October.

In the musical theatre categories, Meg Watson-Jinnette was awarded most outstandin­g lead actor for her role as “Mimi”.

Daniel McPherson, who played “Angel”, and Michaela Philp, who was “Maureen”, won their respective most outstandin­g support actor categories.

Esther White won most outstandin­g musical director.

In the Gippsland theatre categories, Louise Dower was recognised as most outstandin­g cameo performanc­e for her multiple roles in Rent, “The Tango Dancers” for most outstandin­g small ensemble, and the entire cast for most outstandin­g large ensemble.

In the drama/comedy categories, Amy Barbeler was a joint winner for most outstandin­g sound for her work on Off the Leash Theatre’s drama “Minefields and Miniskirts”.

Off the Leash Theatre of Drouin and Warragul Theatre Company attracted 37 nomination­s between them, but it was Wonthaggi Theatrical Group and Moartz who took out the most outstandin­g production awards.

Wonthaggi Theatrical Group won the musical theatre award for “The Boy from Oz” and Moartz won the drama/comedy award for “Rumors”.
