Brenton’s national crown

-

Perseverance has paid off for Warragul cyclist Brenton Jones after being crowned Australian Criterium Champion at the 2019 Road National Championships in Ballarat on Friday.

After one silver and three bronze medals over four years in the event, Jones broke through for an emotional maiden championship.

The 44-kilometre criterium came down to the dying moments as Jones, the sprint specialist and sentimental favourite, rode his way to top of the podium.

“I don’t think it has sunk in yet, I think it will later on tonight when I sit down and see the green and gold jersey in my bedroom,” said Jones.

“I think it’s quite special and a lot of hard work and perseverance over the years to get to the top step. It has been a challenge but to finally get there is a massive reward for everyone that’s helped and supported me along the way.”

“A pat on the back to myself for just persevering and not letting people distract me from never trying to get to the top step. I have tonight and it’s fantastic.”

Fellow Warragul cyclist Cyrus Monk finished in 24th place, following it up with a top 20 finish in Sunday’s road race.

Monk said Sunday was a “solid day”. Forced to work hard to overcome an early split in the race, he was “happy to crack the top 20”. He finished in 19th, just over seven minutes behind winner Michael Freiberg.

Monk will be on the road again today as one of 20 starters in the time trial.

For Brenton Jones, his success in Ballarat followed a tight second place finish on the final stage of the Bay Crits on Thursday.

Jones finished eighth on stage one last Tuesday before a mechanical issue in the closing corners put him out of contention on stage two.

In stage three, Jones tried to jump rival Caleb Ewan on the penultimate corner. However, Ewan’s firepower allowed him to get past and claim the win.

Overall, Jones finished in fifth position.
