McDougall makes it lucky 13
The Drouin Senior Tennis Club championships were played over two Sundays recently, with former champions Brodie Wyatt and Lisa McDougall again successful.
In the men’s singles semis, Brodie defeated Rod Wyatt 8/2 and Simon Young defeated club president Glen Awty, also 8/2 to set up the final.
The first set of the final was close and played at a very high standard. Both players played some great shots and served well.
But then, with the score at 6/5, Brodie hit a couple of great returns and, with a couple of inexperienced mistakes, by Simon the set was over, Brodie winning it 7/5.
In the next set, Simon started well by breaking Brodie in the first game. But then, in the next game, he just missed a drop shot to go 2/0 up. This seemed to inspire Brodie. He broke back and won the next five games to win his third club championship, 7/5, 6/1.
For Simon, he will learn a lot from the experience and it could be his turn next year.
In the women’s singles, Lisa McDougall and Sarah Hulme got to the final after a round robin.
In a battle of the mothers, Lisa just had a bit too much class and experience to defeat a brave Sarah 8/3.
That makes it an amazing 13 singles titles for Lisa McDougall (Gowans), a great effort that may never be beaten.
Lisa and Naomi Williams won the women’s doubles, while Brodie Wyatt and Mick Shannon defeated Rod and Joel Wyatt 6/4, 6/2 to win the men’s doubles.
Brodie then made it three out of three when he and Sarah Hulme won the mixed.
