Iona almost snatch victory

-

Iona has fallen agonisingly short of claiming its first victory of the over 60 cricket season, falling to new team Canterbury by just three wickets.

Electing to bat first at home, Mark McLaughlin of Bairnsdale led the way in his second match with 40 retired. Peter Felstead (41), Peter Heywood (39) and Jon Martindale (22) also retired unbeaten to help Iona post a healthy total of 4/176.

Felstead (2/20), Martindale (2/24), Fred Franks (2/33) and Heywood (1/24) ensured wickets would fall at regular intervals to keep Iona in the hunt.

Former Richmond VFL star Francis Bourke proved to be the thorn in Iona’s side, batting for 20 of his sides’ 36 overs for an unbeaten 36 to see his side home and claim player of the match honours.

Iona treated the match as a moral victory of sorts, given its retired batsmen were unable to come back to the crease.

Felstead received the award for player of the match for Iona.
