Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Garfield

-

Perfect weather all week resulted in some big scores with the course drying right out and plenty of run.

Saturday was the club challenge against Drouin held at Garfield with the visitors keen to score their first victory as Garfield had won the first three years since its inception in 2015.

Despite Drouin bringing their best players in Leon Cook, Ryan Hammond, Mark Allen and Matt Long they came up short yet again with the home sides’ best performers being Rick Falcone with 41 points, Peter Fedorenko with 40, Shane Male with 39, and Harry Matthews and Matt Vander Horst both with 38 points as part of Garfield’s total score of 678 points resulting in an average score of 32.29 points per player.

Best players for Drouin were Leon Cook with 38 points, Paul Davie with 35, Shane Davidson with 34 and R Radford also with 34 all adding up to a total of 585 points resulting in an average score of 29.25 per player.

So it’s back to the drawing board for Drouin to work out a way to get the job done.

For everyone else not playing in the challenge it was a game of single stableford, which attracted a huge field of 110 in the perfect conditions.

A good score of 39 points was required to finish in the money with Paul Kaye being the best and taking out victory for the B grade event with a very nice 44 points playing off his mark of 18, the four points to the better of Peter Skinner and Peter Fedorenko.

Falcone won the A grade event with his 41 points, the two points better than Shane Male and Peter Black.

Veteran John Garner won the C grade event on a count back from Glenn Whelan with a score of 40 points.

A final score of 38 points was needed to win a ball down the line.

Thursday’s single stableford competition saw a nice size field of 55 players turn out for a round with Ken Sumsion the star with a brilliant score of 45 points playing of his mark of 36, finishing well in front of Glenn Whelan who was the next best with 39 points.

Having been a three peat runners up victim over the past five weeks, Grant McKay finally kicked down the door to victory with a top score of 44 points playing off his mark of 13, the five points in advance of a white hot Harry Matthews.

A final score of 37 points was needed to get a ball down the line.
