Cricket season almost ended with a bang

-

Trafalgar Cricket Club experienced a slight disruption to its season when its centre wicket was damaged last week.

Cricket club secretary Liam Durkin said preliminary investigations had determined someone had let off fireworks at the reserve late on Sunday or early on Monday.

A club official found the damage on Monday.

“It’s disappointing that these sorts of things happen to community clubs,” Mr Durkin said.

“We’ve since found out that someone has let off fireworks and have found their way onto the wicket.”

While the damage didn’t impact on scheduled matches, it proved some inconvenience for club training as Baw Baw Shire worked to patch the damage last week.

Luckily, the fireworks hadn’t made their way to the centre of the wicket.

“It’s the bowler’s run up that has been affected,” Mr Durkin said.

“We have two games left there this season, our A grade don’t play there as its not turf.

“Baw Baw Shire will patch it up to get us through the season and they’ve encouraged us to put in an application for a brand-new wicket.

“The wicket is old, it’s been there 20 years or so, so hopefully we get a grant for a new deck.”

Following initial investigation of the damage, it had been thought someone may have set up a fire on the pitch.

Police and Baw Baw Shire are continuing to investigate.
