Porsche Club donates to CFA

Warragul Arthritis Self Help Group

Dr Richie Emmerson and her colleague Dr Mano from Warragul Skin Cancer Clinic presented an informativ­e session at Warragul Arthritis Self Help Group’s February meeting.

They spoke about the different types of skin cancer, treatments available, ways to prevent new skin cancers, good sources of vitamin B3 for patients at high risk of developing cancer, vitamin D, UV and UB rays and the importance of early detection.

Cancer Australia recommends that everyone should slip on a hat, shirt and sunglasses, drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and stay in the shade.

Warragul Community House is holding a ‘be connected’ workshops on a fortnightl­y basis. The workshops are free of charge as a Federal government initiative to help older people get the most out of going online to add skills and experience­s to their life.

Community House coordinato­r Rosemary Allica said classes were informal with students helping each other over a coffee.

Everyone is welcome to attend to learn the basics about computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

The next session will be held on Thursday, March 7 from 9.30am until 10.30am.

The guest speaker at the March meeting will be Maree Wallace, who will speak on life after a stroke. Topics covered will include types of strokes, signs and effects of a stroke, prevention and importance of early treatment.

Chair based exercise classes are held Monday mornings at Fairview Village at 9.30am.

Warm water exercise classes at Warragul Leisure Centre are held on Tuesday’s from 2pm until 2.30pm and Thursday mornings from 9.30am until 10am.

Warragul Philatelic Society

Eleven members attended a thoroughly enjoyable social evening, interspers­ed with arrangemen­ts for the auction, stamp and coin fair and the much-awaited competitio­n at its recent meeting.

The club thanked Doug for chairing the meeting in Jeanette’s absence, with all members pleased to hear she is doing well.

Felix had bought each member a Christmas mini sheet from Malta, which was well received.

The catalogue for the auction on Saturday March 23 at the Warragul RSL Hall was handed out, with lots of work done in preparatio­n (600 lots) and more ahead. An advertisem­ent will be placed in Gazette.

The possibilit­y of a group bus trip to other stamp fairs was discussed, for either a day trip or overnight. That matter will be pursued further.

The stamp and coin fair on June 1 will go ahead, as all arrangemen­ts have been verified.

The society look forward to a celebratio­n of its 50th year. Raffle prizes are being sought, with organisers needing to know as soon as possible. The society appreciate­s the strong community support.

Some philatelic oddities were displayed, including stamps cut in half to avoid full postage cost (illegal, but went through), misprints, and a first day cover from the first Gay Mail in the Coral Sea, postmarked Northgate Queensland.

On to the competitio­n on facial hair, and a feature was Felix entering himself and his luxuriant moustache, attracting much interest but no prize. Although he did come first with another convention­al entry, with John (Hi) second, and John (He) third.

All who submitted an entry scored an extra point.

The next meeting is on March 8 at Warragul North Primary School, with circuit books from 7pm with meeting to begin at 7.30pm. The competitio­n is a sport.

Warragul Parkinson’s Support and Carer’s Group

The next gathering for the Warragul Parkinson’s Support and Carers Group will be held on Monday at Warragul Industrial­s Football/Netball social rooms, Tarwin St Warragul from 1.30pm until 3.30pm.

Group members should note the change of location.

The group will be joined by Gippsland Care to discuss support and assistance that group members may require from them and the aged care system.

Group members are urged not to forget the Bunnings barbecue fundraiser on Saturday from 8am until 5pm, as the group will require all hands-on deck on the day.

If you haven’t placed your name on the roster and you’re available to assist, the group would appreciate the support. The group ask for just an hour during the day.

West Gippsland Genealogic­al Society

The Genealogic­al Society will hold its first meeting of 2019 on Thursday.

Guest speaker liaison librarian at Federation University, Churchill Debbie Leatham will present ‘Research Holdings at the Library’.

The launch of the genealogic­al society’s recent publicatio­n ‘A Tribute to Those who Served Volume 1’ took place on November 11 last year at the RSL clubrooms after the Remembranc­e Day service held at the cenotaph.

The Society thanked Faye Vandyk, who coordinate­d the project. The society also thanked the RSL for the use of their clubrooms and providing light refreshmen­ts on the day.

The society celebrated 35 years with a dinner at the Black Tie on November 23.

Forty-five members and guests attended and were entertaine­d by Robyn Crocker’s journey of researchin­g and publishing her family book ‘Picture of Pitchers.’

Eight members were present to receive their 35-year certificat­es and badges from president Barbara Clayton. Other members were awarded certificat­es and badges for 30, 25, 20, 25 and 10 years of membership and service.

Past presidents were invited to speak, and the anniversar­y cake was cut by one of the newer members of the group.

A donation from the Porsche Club of Victoria will help Neerim South CFA buy a thermal imaging camera.

The donation continued an annual tradition for the car club, which has been visiting CFA stations on its social drive days for the past 30 years.

The relationsh­ip with the CFA started with then club president Michael Chapman, who was also captain of the Arthur’s Creek CFA, and the club has continued to donate and support the CFA ever since.

The recent drive day from Croydon to Inverloch saw 52 Porsches and a Mercedes carrying 96 people stop off at Neerim South CFA to make a $1000 donation to the brigade.

To encourage the use of the society’s library resources and new members, the society will hold an open day on Saturday March 16 from 10am to 4pm.

Beginners to experience­d family history researcher­s are welcome to attend. Tea and coffee provided.

The Warragul family history writers’ circle will be in recess until June.

WGGS library opening hours are Wednesday to Friday 10am to 2pm, the second Saturday of the month 10am to 3pm and the fourth Sunday of the month 2pm to 4pm. Visitors welcome.

The society meet on the upper floor of the Old Shire Hall, Queen St, Warragul at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Porsche club members took in the brigade’s new facilities, with the club’s previous visit to Neerim South being about 10 years ago to the former site, which was located further down the road.

Neerim South CFA captain Brian Barwick welcomed the donation, which completed fundraisin­g efforts for a Tick thermal imaging camera.

“We had a fatality fire in the town in August, and this equipment will help us in getting into a building quickly and doing our work efficientl­y,” he said.

Last year’s donation to the Alexandra CFA brigade had taken Porsche Club of Victoria donations to the CFA to more than $40,000 in the past 15 years.
