Garfield declares its Top Guns

Fantastic weather ensuring good conditions for Garfield Golf Club’s major events the Top Gun final.

The final was played over the eighteen holes by a field of 19 with one competitor being knocked out at each hole by a chip off from greenside areas.

It was Geoff Turner who prevailed as the winner with a double bogey six on the last hole, defeating Gerry Vandenesse­n who wiped the last hole.

Andrew Patton finished third, Grant McLure fourth and Shane Male in fifth to round out the major prize winners.

Turner was actually a wild card entry into the event and took full opportunit­y of his good fortune.

For everyone else it was a game of single stableford with a field of 64 participat­ing with a score of 36 points down to a count back required to finish in the money.

Ron Fielding won the A grade event on a count back with 39 points from Reece Fishwick with a further point back to Trevor Male in third place.

All three grades were decided by a countback decision with Dean Shannon winning B grade with a score of 40 points from Geoff Hobson, while the ageless John Garner was victorious for the C grade event with a score of 37 points from David Aitken .

Wally Poulter had the two nearest the pins on the fourth and 14th par three holes.

Bill Low continues on with his good recent run of form by finishing third in the C grade event, along with finishing in the money for Thursday’s competitio­n with a score of 34 points playing off his mark of 29.

The two grades were up for grabs on Thursday with a field of 48 players contesting the regular stableford competitio­n.

Gary Kelly did best for the A grade event with a winning score of 41 points, the four points in advance of Shane Male playing of his mark of just three.

Greg Wadeson broke a long run of outs with a score of 41 points well in advance of Richard Gould and Barrie Cousin, the next best with scores of 35 points each.

A final score of 34 points or better was required to win a ball down the line.

Nest Saturday is the March monthly medal, while the Saturday after that is the King Trophy, which is played as a 27 hole foursomes event. Results: Monday, stableford (field of 12): 1st George Haxby (32) 37; Best front nine: Pat O’Brien 19; Best back nine: Ray Walker 23.
