Five majors to Ashley Waterstone

-

Poowong took Yarragon to task in the Panthers’ first game at the Magpies’ home ground on Saturday.

Both sides traded majors in the first quarter, with the visitors finishing the first term up by a goal.

But the Magpies bounced back in the second term, kicking four goals in reply. Poowong defenders ensured only a single goal slipped through for Yarragon.

After the main break the Pies continued to widen the gulf, kicking four goals and three behinds.

The visitors did their best to keep up, ending the third term with an additional four goals and three behinds.

The efforts of the home side in the second quarter had meant that even though both sides shared scores in the third term, Poowong was still in front 73 points to 55.

The Pies accuracy suffered in the final term, with Poowong forwards kicking two goals and six behinds.

But it did not matter Poowong had already won the game. Three goals two from the visitors put their final scoreline at 11.9.75, not quite enough to account for Poowong’s 13.13.91.

Best on ground for the winning side was Ashley Waterstone. He was backed up by the efforts of Jai Newcome, Jayden Sullivan, Lachlan Green, Michael Harris and Joseph Bisognin. Waterstone had a field day in front of goal with a solid five majors to his name.

Jai Newcome was not far behind with four goals. Jack Hazendonk kicked two majors, and there was a goal each for Jed Benham and James Doria.

For the away side it was Darcy Jones who finished the day as their most influential man. Teammates Chase Blackwood, Devin Pollack, Paul Harvey, Donovan Pell and Andrew Budge also received honourable mentions.

The result sees Poowong keep their number three spot on the ladder while the Panthers drop to seventh. Poowong have the luxury of anther home game next week, this time against Lang Lang. Yarragon are also at home, but they play unbeaten side Longwarry.
