Dees win in soggy thriller

-

Cora Lynn Recreation Reserve played host to a huge upset that saw the Demons claim victory in a wet and soggy affair in week one of WGFNC finals.

Down by 11 points at the first change, many thought the script had already been written for the Demons - a script which would see them out of the competition in the first week, unable to handle the pressure of an in-form Inverloch Kongwak outfit.

But those predictions did not ring true as the game played out.

The second quarter saw both sides fight hard, with Inverloch Kongwak struggling to find the main target between the posts. Their tally was 3.11 at the main break, compared to Koo wee rup's five goals three.

The Dees took the lead as the sides headed into halftime, but as grey clouds rolled in it became clear both teams would soon face a new competitor, the weather.

As the third quarter began and the rain began to fall, the Sea Eagles struggled to stay in flight. They added just four behinds in that soggy third term.

Koo wee rup kicked three goals five in reply. As the final term started the rain continued to fall, and so did Inverloch's ever-evaporating chance of claiming victory.

Thirty points were needed for the Sea Eagles to wrestle control from Koo wee rup in the final quarter, a deficit which proved insurmountable.

Koo wee rup consolidated their lead, kicking three goals two in that final term to end the day on 11.10-76. Inverloch Kongwak, unable to hold off the Demon's momentum, had fallen short by 29 points, walking from the ground on their final footy game for the year with 5.17-47 on their side of the scoreboard.

Luke Walker walked from the ground a happy man. He was best on for the victors, having been backed up by big performances from Darren Sheen, who kicked a massive six majors, Nathan Muratore, Mitchell Collins, Joel Gibson and Bradley Harding. Also influential was Nathan Voss, who kicked four goals for the Dees.

With great momentum heading into the rest of finals, Koo wee rup will line up against Cora Lynn on Saturday, hoping to claim win number two for the series.

Tooradin-Dalmore broke a long drought on Saturday, finally claiming a finals victory over Cora Lynn at Koo wee rup. Tooradin-Dalmore staked their claim in the first term, opening with a strong five goals two.

The Cobras had managed four goals two, with seven points needed to win control of the match. But Tooradin were determined to not let that happen.

They added two majors three to their tally while Cora Lynn slipped another goal past the Tooradin backline, bringing the deficit to 13 points at the main break.

As the third term got underway, control of the match well and truly belonged to the Seagulls.

The vast majority of minor and majors scores came from the boots of TooradinDalmore. By the end of the third quarter the Seagulls' tally was 10.13-73 - a long way in front of second-placed side Cora Lynn who had managed just 7.5-47 by then.

The final nail in the coffin came in the last term, with the Seagulls managing another three majors and five behinds to bring their end-of-day tally to 13.18-96. Cora Lynn went home with a scoreline of 8.6-54.

The Cobras will have a second chance and will line up against Koo wee Rup at Korumburra on Sunday. Tooradin Dalmore will take on Phillip Island, the minor premiers, at Bass.
