Gulls on march to finals

-

Warragul won all three senior netball games against Bairnsdale as finals approach.

A grade: Warragul 43 defeated Bairnsdale 36.

Warragul started off well with plenty of turnovers from the defensive end. They took a small lead into the first break.

The Gulls chipped away in the second. However, with the pressure being put on from Bairnsdale, the half-time break saw only four goals in it.

The Gulls had a third quarter they would quickly like to forget. As a result, they were in a position where they had to put everything out on court to get over the line.

Mackenzie Minichiello had a huge last quarter. She picked off balls all over the court, which certainly lifted momentum for the team.

Myah Healey came out firing in goal shooter, proving difficult to beat under the post, as the attack end held good composure and knew every ball was crucial.

It was a great finish to the game, showing what the Gulls can do when they put their minds to it.

Awards: Mackenzie Minichiello and Shae Kyle.

B grade: Warragul 58 defeated Bairnsdale 33.

Warragul was caught off guard with Bairnsdale’s competitiveness in the first quarter.

With only a small lead at the first break, Warragul quickly realised it had to make some changes. Adapted and making a change to the attacking end play, Warragul had a strong second quarter with 18 goals.

The Gulls utilised their depth and versatility as they continued to build on their lead for the remainder of the game.

Even in the warmer conditions, Warragul played out a strong four quarters.

Awards: Bec O’Halloran and Alanis Joyner.

C grade: Warragul 50 defeated Bairnsdale 31.

A solid first quarter by Warragul saw the scores 12-2 and in good stead for the rest of the game.

Jessie Gleeson and Eliza Monacella did well against some accurate goalers. With Grace Cant, Cindy Dawson, Hannah McKenzie and Georgia Lyons rotating through the midcourt, it meant Warragul continually had fresh legs to maintain a good intensity for four quarters.

The Gulls took great care of their possession for the entire game and goalers Sophie Fennell and Kim Weller rewarded the team with some excellent shooting.

Warragul won every quarter and now look forward to the final home and away game against Moe.

Awards: Grace Cant and Sheehan.

Under 17: Warragul 23 Bairnsdale 39.

In a very competitive game, the Gulls played some of their best netball against some tough competition.

Although the Gulls are yet to get a win, each player on their team tries their best every week. Saturday was no different.

Elodie Williamson and Grace Radford kept things steady in defence Kelly lost to and made the job for Tanae Guy and Birdie Mulqueen very easy in the goals; providing them with lots of opportunities.

Lily Sheehan, Ella Weir and Laura Miller worked tirelessly in the midcourt and did an awesome job bringing the ball down the court and feeding to the goalers. Awards: Ella Weir and Lily Sheehan. Under 15: Warragul 22 lost to Bairnsdale 46.

Coming up against third placed Bairnsdale, the Gulls gave it a real crack.

It was great to hear a lot of talk and encouragement amongst the team on the court. The positivity from the Gulls gave them a new level of confidence and this drove them to really attack the ball.

They didn’t come away with the win, but they did have a lot of fun.

Awards: Emily Hobbs and Olivia Muir.

Under 13: Warragul 9 Bairnsdale 41.

A shuffle of positions due to the unavailability of two players, meant the Gulls had another opportunity to display their versatility across the court.

While the scoreboard was not in their favour, there was some great ball movement down the court and feeding into the goal circle.

Congratulations to Lucy Williamson and Tia Jenkins on playing their 50th club games.

Awards: Lucy Williamson and Pippa Cook. lost to
