Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Buckley-Cook’s stunning six

-

The sun was shining through for a fantastic day of soccer in Drouin on sponsor’s day.

With only three games to go in the season, every game mattered. The top of the table clash in the men’s senior division was the highlight.

The crowd was out in full support all day and the sponsors were treated to a come from behind win in the seniors as the rain came in.

Drouin will travel to Lang Lang next for the second last game before finals.

Men’s seniors: Drouin defeated Leongatha 32. The top of the table clash did not disappoint. Leongatha got the early jump and Drouin trailed 0-1 at the break.

Drouin came out inspired after the coach’s half-time chat. Tim Laidlaw was on fire with two goals to bring the game square with 15 minutes to go.

Bailey Kittelty then sealed the game for Drouin who ran out 3-2 winners in an exciting finish.

Men’s reserves: Drouin defeated Leongatha 71.

The game’s tempo was set early when Drouin Dragons hosted Leongatha Knights. Jarrod Buckley-Cook found the net in the first couple of minutes. It would be his first of six goals for the day.

Drouin led 4-0 at half-time, with all four coming from Jarrod.

The second half was much of the same in muddy conditions. Jarrod linked up well with the midfield to kick another two well-finished goals.

With Drouin 6-0 up, Leongatha hit back when a free kick was held up in the air by the wind. The keeper was unable to read the kick and he spilled the ball out to the poaching attacker to make it 6-1.

The win was rounded off shortly after with Reece Harrison getting on the scoresheet.

Goals: Jarrod Buckley-Cook (six), Reece Harrison.

Women’s seniors: Drouin drew Leongatha 22.

It was a great game by the Drouin players who all took the pitch wanting the ball. It resulted in plenty of passing, name calling and working together as a team.

It was hard going, with the ground being very soft. However, the Drouin girls all kept pushing.

Chanice Muzorori kicked Drouin’s first goal and Alison Dixon kicked the second with a perfect cross into the net.

It was a great game to watch and see everyone trying their best. Awards: Melissa Dixon and Rebecca Martin. Under 16s: Drouin defeated Phillip Island 10/Drouin defeated Leongatha 6-2.

The under 16 Drouin Dragons are back with a bang. After five weeks with no scheduled games, it was good to see the boys and girls back on the pitch.

The Dragons travelled to a cold and wet Mirboo North on Friday night to tackle Phillip Island. It was a tight affair, with Drouin scoring the one and only goal through Tyan George in the first half.

The team played hard all night, but it was clear to see they had no match play in five weeks. It was great to see Thomas Agudo back out and running around after a long layoff.

The Dragons backed it up on Sunday against Leongatha in Drouin – its second game in 36 hours.

The team had a nice start, putting the first goal in the net with two minutes. A dubious penalty to Leongatha resulted in 1-1 at half-time.

Drouin gained a 2-1 lead before the team kicked into gear. They bagged four goals to Leongatha’s two.

The back half was well led by Thomas Agudo and Harry Graham. The legs were getting tired and resulted in many substitutes.

It was an awesome win by a great bunch of talented kids.

Goals: Tyan George (two), Henry Grant (two), Charlie Norman and Simon Taveira.

Best: Jackson Spencer, Harry Graham and Thomas Agudo. Under 14B: Drouin defeated Korumburra 8-3. The Dragons travelled to fifth placed Korumburra aiming to cement their place in the top two ahead of the upcoming finals.

Drouin fielded only nine players against a fullstrength Korumburra outfit and looked in danger of being overrun during a hectic first five minutes. However, Drouin struck first thanks to a great through ball by Conor McCluskey which James Short delicately placed into the net.

Some slick build up play by McCluskey and Finley Lock led to Short's second of the game. Some great play by Thomas Dennis gave Short time and space to lash home a powerful drive from the edge of the box for his hat-trick.

Korumburra looked dangerous at times, but there was more than a touch of fortune when an over-hit cross was caught in the gusty wind and looped over keeper Beau Joiner's head for their first of the day.

McCluskey then got on the score sheet, finishing some neat work by Dennis. However, it was Korumburra who ended the half strongly, scoring on the counter to make the score 4-2 at half-time.

The second half was almost all Drouin’s. Korumburra managed a consolation goal. But with two further goals scored by Short, and counterattack strikes scored by McCluskey and Dylan Sotiropoulos, Drouin ran out convincing winners.

The performances of Dennis, Short and Dennis Pilikidis stood out for the Dragons. Under 12s: Drouin lost to Leongatha 5-6. Dragons started off strongly in surprisingly warm conditions, attacking down the midfield.

Two quick goals just before half-time saw Drouin go in confident at 3-1.

However, Leongatha never stopped as Drouin began to lose its edge in the midfield.

A few defensive errors and lapses of concentration meant Drouin eventually went down. Best player: Darcy Spencer (three goals). Coaches award: Aiden Johnson (two goals). Encouragement award: Haridu Kahandawa. Under 10s: Drouin drew Leongatha 0-0. On a beautiful morning, Drouin Dragons came up against a good team who handed out a 0-5 loss earlier in the season.

Drouin started the game well. A lot of the game was at tracking half but Drouin could not get any goals.

With about 10 minutes left in the half, Leongatha started to play well and had a couple of chances.

The second half was a great contest with Leongatha having a very good chance but missing and Drouin coming close as well.

It wasn’t until right at the end of the game when James Midgley cleared a goal off the line at one end and smashed it up to Remi Butler who nearly scored at the other end. However, it was a great result for Drouin and showed the improvement.

Awards: James Midgley, Corban Hall and Remi Butler. Under 8s: Leongatha only had four players but Drouin kids, without hesitation, were happy to jump over and help out.

Will played a cracker game in goals, diving on the ball and calling out to let the players know he was there to grab it. He also kicked two goals for the other team in the second half.

Cal had the pace on early, shooting a goal in the first half and stopping a few in the second half as he stepped into goalkeeper.

Audrey and Jas worked great up front passing between each other to get one in the net as well.

Mieke worked the ball down the wing to get it into the attacking end numerous times. She also made space for her teammates to pass it to her.

Adam used his body very well in a defensive manner in what seemed to be a very physical game.

Spencer held the back line well, clearing the ball out to the side to get the ball back down to the attacking end.

Max did well, running the ball down and narrowly missing a few shots. He was unlucky not to get any in the net.

The Dragons had some guest appearances due to the lack of numbers. Mauve Davies from the under 6s and Cal’s sister Emma Brown stepped in to help out.

Both girls played a fantastic game, with Emma narrowly missing a shot a goal.

Coaches Award went to all the kids for showing great sportsmanship.
