50 years ago...

Buln Buln began celebratin­g a thrilling one point victory over 1969 premiers Hallora-Strezlecki, before a scoreboard error halted the festivitie­s.

The scoreboard should have showed a 9.7 draw, the change coming 20 minutes after the siren had blown, souring the Lyrebirds day.

Travelling to Bairnsdale, Warragul United continued their dominant run, with a 10-2 victory. Jim Smith Jr the main culprit, netting four goals while Bob Cairns and Terry Boyes both added two for the away side.

Warragul fall again

Despite taking a four goal lead into the final quarter in blustery conditions, Warragul went down to Heyfield by 15 points, letting slip another opportunit­y for a win.

Drouin Apex loomed as a danger side for many in the A Grade competitio­n of the Drouin Table Tennis associatio­n. Am 8-3 victory over Warragul Club signalling their intentions this season.

25 years ago…

Andrew Runnalls took out the Stableford event at the Warragul Golf Club, a big field of 108 players took to the course in fine conditions. Over the hill in Drouin, it was Mark Allen who topped the A Grade field with a score of 71 to lead the 122 strong playing group.

Dilger too strong

As cyclists were greeted with a warm autumn day, it was Daniel Dilger who crossed the line in the opening time trial event of the Sean’s Pizza Double Header event held in Nilma. He pipped Stephen Fenwick by a mere three seconds. In the second event, Gary Jackson held off Scott Keeble by just a second to win the 20km race in 35:29.

In a high scoring clash, Nilma-Darnum overcame Buln by 20 points, with both teams hitting the 100 mark on the scoreboard.

Year 11 Drouin Secondary student Ashley Tainton was selected in the Australian under 20 volleyball team to tour New Zealand. Upon returning, Tainton would head to Nationals later in the year.

Drouin put a tough week behind them on the field, dispatchin­g Cora Lynn by 46 points, coach Steve Hodge leading from the front, absorbing a big hit before getting up and continuing on, lifting the spirits of his fellow teammates.

10 years ago… Dream realised

Kicking a goal after the siren is every kids dream. For Mark Jackson, it was a reality when he slotted home the game winning goal from 35 metres out to seal victory for Drouin over Wonthaggi in an incredible match. Jackson, who was playing in his first game, bobbed up to kick three final quarter goals including the winner. He finished second best on ground and walked away with a new legion of fans from Drouin after his heroics.

Andy Soumilas was best on ground in a dominant performanc­e for his Hawks in the seniors, who dispatched Wonthaggi by 84 points at home.

Tough day for Gulls

Warragul struggled against Leongatha in the netball, losing all six grades against the top side. Despite the losses, some positives were taken out of the matches, with several players making their A and B Grade debuts for the club.

Ellinbank and Buln shared the points in the EDNA, playing out a thrilling 41 all draw in their B Grade clash.

In the A Grade, wins to Ellinbank, Poowong and the Dusties made sure all three sides sat locked at 16 points a piece on the ladder, making up the top three positions on the table after Round 4.

Age just a number

86 year old Eric Barrass achieved an incredible feat, scoring less than his age during an amazing round at Warragul. His 83 off the stick took out the B Grade competitio­n. Eric, now 96, is still golfing at the Country Club each week.
