Pedestrian amenity a priority

-

Drouin needs to be a walkable town, according to the draft Drouin Township Plan.

The plan proposes a number of walking and cycling improvements to make walking and cycling the preferred mode of transport for short trips within the town centre.

The plan recommends that all streets in the town centre be walkable, by providing a high level of pedestrian amenity.

Consultants also support council’s measures to fill in the gaps in the pedestrian network to ensure Drouin, beyond the town centre is well connected and accessible.

Ensuring adequate pedestrian pathways and shared paths better connect the secondary and tertiary areas of Drouin to the town centre is a central part of the plan.

However, for the long term, consultants said cycle lanes also should be included.

It is recommended that bicycle parking be provided at multiple locations to encourage people to cycle to the town centre.

Other recommendation to improve pedestrian and cycling amenity include:

Ensure all streets in the primary town area have footpaths on both sides of the street;

Speed reductions and traffic calming measures for vehicles;

Improve pedestrian safety in the Woolworths car park;

Upgrade key laneways for lighting and surfacing where pedestrian activity and movement is desired; and,

Encourage the provision of trip end facilities for cyclists and walkers at the railway station including, lockers, showers, change rooms and clothes drying rooms.
