50 years ago…

Drouin’s A Grade hockey team fought in the final minutes to even the match against the Rangers, 4-4. In heavy wet conditions, it came down to a strike from Barbara Colquhoun who ensured her side stayed undefeated.

Ellinbank had only themselves to blame, falling to Hallora-Strezlecki by six points. Despite having nine scoring shots in the final term, the Eagles were only able to kick three goals, with the 1969 premiers holding on for the win.

Warragul had a tough 45 point loss in front of a large crowd at Sale, some hoping they weren’t quizzed on how they could lose to a team that was described as a "patch work side” that was considered an easy victory. Clearly it wasn’t to be for Ted Ray and his Warragul side, who slumped to another disappoint­ing loss.

25 years ago…

Nilma Darnum rattled home against Catani, using an eight goal to one final quarter to complete a 42 point turnaround after three quarter time. Down 21 points at the final change, the Bombers kicked seven goals in the space of just 15 minutes to completely turn the game. It’s the best start to a season for Nilma Darnum in their 49 year history, according to club stalwart Bob Young.

Tennis pro Mark Sheppard began coaching a 12 week program that helped grow the tennis stars of the future in Drouin. The McDonald’s Tennis Squad incorporat­es training alongside some new technology used by the USA team to enhance footwork and measure the pace of each players serve.

10 years ago...

Drouin skipper Bob McCallum’s 100th game inspired his side to victory over Sale by 22 points at home. Bob was named second best on the park and was given a Gatorade shower, the much respected and loved Hawk continuing to dominate the season for his side in the ruck.

Six games in the EDNA were decided by less than three goals in the C and D Grades across the region, making for some exciting finishes and nervous moments for some proud parents along the sidelines.

Warragul golfer Janine Williams had a day out in her midweek round, finishing atop of the A Grade standings with an 82 of the stick, to go along with her A Grade medal, third round victory in the silver spoon, nearest to the pin and a round in which she broke her handicap.
