Scouts help tree renewal

-

Drouin scouts recently helped the Friends of Drouin’s Trees with planting in Alex Goudie Native Park as part of the Trees of Nations renewal project.

It was a cold, frosty morning and crunching underfoot, but that didn’t deter six boys from 1st Drouin Scouts.

The scouts helped plant out about 150 trees, shrubs and native grasses. As the morning went on, they got warmed up by the sun and worked hard. They planted in and around trees above a blue stone wall that curves around the park behind the Trees of Nations. While they were planting, workers repaired the wall.

Scout Bobby Haynes, who organised the activity, said it was amazing to see the scouts come out on their first day of school holidays.

“It was a great way to get together after doing term two scouting activities online,” he said. “There was lots of chatter and laughter and play, as well as hard work for the community.”

He said the boys shared the different tasks such as digging the holes, placing the plants, making guards to put around the plants, and finally watering. After the planting, Peter Ware from Friends of Drouin’s Trees took the scouts for a short bird walk, explaining about the birds of the park and photography skills.

The activity will be able to go towards badge work for the scouts who attended.

Bobby said he was working on his environment badge which would go towards his Scout Medallion. The other scouts will use their time towards community service hours.

The Trees of Nations renewal project is aimed to be unveiled on Saturday, August 1 at noon with tree plantings, sign unveilings and a barbecue.
