In the three years immediately preceding the war the population increased from 4,568,707 to 4,940,952 so that since 31st December 1914 the increase in population amounted to only a little over 350,000.

About 40 golfers attended the tournament on the 2nd inst, held on the Warragul golf links, situated on Mr John O’Connor’s property. The result will be that at least a sum of £10 will be paid over to the hospital. A very pleasant day was spent, and the afternoon tea presided over by Mrs. J O’Connor and to a large extent provided by her, was much enjoyed. PARISH CENSURE ARCHBISHOP

The statement of the Archbishop of Sydney, the Most Rev. Dr. M. Loane – who recently said that he would refuse an invitation to an ecumenical service to be conducted in Sydney during the visit to Australia of Pope Paul V1 – has been censured at Warragul.

The censure was contained in a motion adopted at a meeting of leading Anglicans here.

Dr. Loane has been widely criticized throughout Australia for his views on the ecumenical service – and comments he made about the wisdom of pursuing efforts to achieve Christian unity.

He emphasised what he described as basic doctrinal differences between the Roman Catholic faith and Protestantism, expressing the view that he could not in conscience take part in the service.

The Warragul censure motion was adopted unanimously at a combined meeting last Tuesday of St Paul’s (Warragul) vestry and church wardens from the outer centers of Ellinbank and Nilma.

There were 19 present at the meeting.

WARRAGUL TO REMAIN

Warragul Football Club is likely to initiate fresh moves to “Split” the LVFL into separate East and West sections in a bid to eliminate long distance travelling.

This was hinted by former President Mr R. Long at the club’s annual meeting last Wednesday night, during discussion on a motion to reaffiliate the LVFL for the 1971 season.

Warragul FC was he instigator of a move which failed two years ago.

Mr Long said he believed it was “only a matter of time” before there was a split in the LVFL.

“I did propose that at a later stage the club initiate a move to divide the LVFL into east and west sections,” he said.

“It is believed the attitude toward the move has changed somewhat in certain circles, while other clubs who were in favor of the move still retain the same view. “

“I think all looks well at the moment.”

Former Club President Mr M. Goyne moved that the meeting adopt the recommendation of t a public meeting on August 18 that the club affiliate with the LVFL for 1971.

However, during his annual report earlier in the meeting, Mr Goyne said he believed reaffiliation with the LVFL was worthwhile only if plans were made in the immediate future for Warragul to win a premiership.

MR W. Birch said he believed much thought should be given to the club seeking affiliation elsewhere.

“I believe we could be better off financially by staying at this end of the Latrobe Valley,” he said.

Mr A. Tatterson said that in view of suggestions that the club seek affiliation with the WGFL, he had obtained from Drouin FC costs of the operations for the 1969 season.

He said the club had total expenses of $4294 and finished with a profit of about $250.

Warragul’s 1970 coach Mr E. Ray said that he had asked Mr J. McDonald of the WGFL for his opinion on Warragul’s chances of affiliation with that League.

“He told me his personal view was that we would be struggling to gain admission to the WGFL,” he said.

“I believe if we are imaginative enough, we should remain in the LVFL.

“If we become professions in our approach there is no reason why we can’t be a strong force.

“Basically, I believe that if we can raise sufficient money we should stay there.”

After the motion was carried, new President Mr J. Sinnett said he believed the club had made the right decision.

“We have proved this year that we can raise money,” he said.

“I can’t see why Warragul should not be a strong force in the LVFL.”

Upsurge in bookings

The Darnum Hall was in almost constant use during the winter months in a year in which the volume of hirings increased sharply, Hall committee president Mr. G. Silby said at the annual meeting.

Mr. Silby told the annual meeting that that the committee’s income from the hiring of the hall was doubled.

This was attributed largely to use of the hall for badminton.

During the year, the hall was repainted inside. In his report, Mr. Silby referred to the cooperation of the Warragul Shire and the valuable work done for the committee by Mrs. F. O’Brien (mowing), Mrs. P. Boland (cleaning) Mrs. H. Kent (bookings) and Mrs. M. Pearce.

Mr Silby was later reelected to leas the committee.
