Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Waste of money

-

In mid last year residents of Church Street Drouin received advice that action was to be taken to address the traffic problems that are escalating in this street.

Many residents would have been pleased that this would have given some relief from the regular unsociable speeding and hoon behaviour that occurs every day in this street

What was delivered was just white lines and sketches of white bicycles painted on this road which have faded quickly.

What a waste of ratepayer money that has done nothing to alleviate this continuing increasing problem that needs to be rectified.

Having witnessed several near misses involving children crossing this street I feel it is only a matter of time before a speeding vehicle will cause catastrophic results for a local family.

One could wonder if our well paid councillors could sometime drag themselves away from their coffee filled days and witness the volume of traffic that travels this area.

Perhaps we are asking too much. I have emailed my concerns to a council engineer who simply advised to contact local police. Councillors where are you?

After the recent tragic accident at the entrance to Gumbuya World, both Gary Blackwood and I have been overwhelmed with community requests demanding that we address this issue. We should never forget the trauma for this family as well as the witnesses and first responders to this carnage on our part of the highway. Given the large amount of traffic around Warragul and Drouin, this danger zone is likely to become even more threatening, especially as the popularity of Gumbuya World increases during holiday periods and in the summer months.

Last week in Canberra, I met with the Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport, Mr Scott Buchholz, MP, along with relevant Commonwealth departmental officials. We will be working together with the Victorian government to put all our resources together to come up with a plan to alleviate the danger of entering and passing through this intersection. We will keep you posted on any updates regarding this issue.
