The Baw Baw Budgerigar Society held an impromptu meeting on Monday, February 8 with 13 people in attendance including a new junior member who joined the club to learn more about looking after her recent purchase of a pet budgerigar.

Darren gave a Powerpoint presentation about the various garden weeds that are enjoyed by budgies in the aviary. The list also included a list of various herbs that can also be fed to the birds.

It was stressed not to feed weeds that had been sprayed and to not overfeed them.

Birds will usually let you know what they like by eating everything quickly. If it is left then the feed/weed is not what they want.

Members also benched some birds for judging on the night.

Darren talked about making sure birds are ready for the show bench and had a number of birds on display showing various stages of moulting and indicated to members what they should look for before presenting for judging.

No pin feathers, bright colours in the wings, flight and tail feathers in place after the moult.

Ken Lawrence in the intermediate section won the night with his albino with Maxine Clark having the reserve with her normal grey. Ewen Slater took out beginner bird with his yellow face grey.

Due to selection of birds for the State Adult Championship on Sunday, March 7 the next meeting will be held on Monday, March 1 at 6.30pm. It is an opportunity for visitors or people interested to see all of the varieties of birds that will be on display for selection.

Anyone wishing to attend club meetings is welcome. They are held on a monthly basis in the old tennis club rooms in Burke Street opposite the aquatic centre. COVID restrictions apply.

Meetings normally begin at 7 pm and last about two hours, usually with a guest speaker. Anyone wanting more information can contact the club’s website bawbawbudgerigarsociety.weebly.com or the Facebook page. The next meeting will be on Monday, March 1.
