Rabl takes five for Warriors

- by Joel Batson

Division 3: Neerim District 147 v Western Park

A slow day of cricket at Western Park saw the home side take the edge over Neerim on day one.

Losing the toss and bowling, Michael Rabl (5-46) put in an enormous effort, bowling most of the day in an epic performance as the likes of Fletcher Kennedy (2-12) and Toby Bransgrove (2-37) provided ample support.

For the Stags, they struggled to get many contributors in the most important game of the season as skipper Jamie Gleeson passed the half-century mark, pushing his side to a total of 147 and setting up an intriguing final day of the season.

Yarragon 83 v Garfield-Tynong 6/81

A terrific opening day from Garfield-Tynong against Yarragon kept their season alive, as hopes of an outright victory seem possible. Bowling first, the Titans took the ascendency from the get-go against an outclassed Yarragon line-up, as Will Pickering (3-22), Glen Johnston (2-20) and Steven Lewis (2-11) ousted the home side for just 83.

In reply, Garfield-Tynong would have been looking to clean up the runs quickly, and set up a possible declaration, however, Sam McDonald (3-32) fought back and kept his side in with a chance of victory.

Despite this, a fighting knock from Anthony Hart (27*) put the visitors within touching distance of victory, as they reached 6-81 at stumps, setting up what could be a frenetic second week.

Ellinbank 151 v Catani

Catani’s bid to stay alive this season gained traction on the weekend, as they bowled league-leaders Ellinbank out for a slightly under-par total.

Bowling first in an overcast, but humid, conditions, the Cats found staunch resistance from Michael Pandolfo (37) and Chris Pallot (36), however there were few other contributions of note from the usually potent Eagles line-up, as Catani stuck fat.

Danny Brewster (3-47) bowled himself into the ground, earning three wickets for his troubles, as did Bailey Sporish (3-13)- as Ellinbank battled their way to 151 all out, creating a scenario in which all Division 3 games are in the balance, with all results having an effect on the finals structure.
