Big prizes in esports comp

Gamers can put their skills to the test and compete for big prizes in an esports tournament in Warragul.

Free to enter, the 2021 Baw Baw Esports Cup will run at the West Gippsland Arts Centre from Saturday, May 8 to Sunday, May 9.

With a $1225 prize pool on offer, gamers can join the fun, meet like-minded players and see who will be crowned the first Baw Baw Esports champion.

A free play zone will also be on offer for younger kids.

Baw Baw Shire has teamed up with Australian Esports League (AEL) for the event.

The tournament will feature Super Smash Bros, Ultimate (SSBU) 1v1, Just Dance 2021 and Mario Kart 8 events. In addition, exclusivel­y for those aged 13 and above, the event will also include a Rocket League and SSBU tournament.

These games were selected to cater for all levels of players. During selected matches there will be a live broadcast with commentary, steamed for audiences to watch.

“This is the first time an event of this kind will be held in our shire, offering gamers with an opportunit­y to put their skills to the test and compete for prizes,” Baw Baw Shire mayor Danny Goss said.

“Esports is a growing pursuit for many Australian­s,” AEL executive producer and CEO Darren Kwan said. “This event will provide gamers in Baw Baw Shire and the surroundin­g area the opportunit­y to compete in popular games. This event also provides an exciting draw card for visitors to the Baw Baw Shire region”.
