Warm conditions at Bellbird Park

Round 2 of hockey in West Gippsland was played over the weekend and warmer than normal conditions saw the players have to adjust.

The day began with the Under 12s Warriors v Drouids. It was a good hit out for the young ones and Flynn Furphy from Drouids had a huge day out scoring a hat-trick of goals. Giacinta Lyle helped with one for a team total of four. The Warriors managed two with goals each to Zali Gordon and Axel Turner.

The other Under 12 game was the Gulls and Aztecs with the Gulls running away winners, six to one. Liam Finger scored three as did new to hockey and budding superstar Kaely Oellermann. For the Aztecs it was captain Deakin Boltong who found the back of the goal.

In the under 15s the Warrior were way too strong for the Drouids recording a 6-0 win. Harry Coster led the scoring with four with singles to Will Stephens, Tom Pettigrew and Hamish Zurrer.

The other under 15 game had the same result. 6-0. This time it was the Gulls who dominated over the Aztecs. Marisah Mock and Bobby Haynes both played well for the Gulls while Eve Thorpe and Deakin Boltong battled hard right to the end. The goal scorers were Marisah Mock with two and singles to Josiah Wells, Bobby Haynes, Regina Brown and Chloe Johnstone.

By the time the Under 18s took the field it was very warm and both the Warriors and the

Drouids were short on numbers. This took its toll especially on the Warriors who were soundly defeated 10-0. Max Hunt scored four while Mikayla McDonald had three and Sky McDonald, Owen Polderman and Ben Shellekens all scored one each.

Game of the round was the other under 18 game between Gulls and Aztecs. It was played at a frantic pace and tempers were a little frayed at times. Aztecs pulled away in the end and proved that they are the team to beat. The 5-0 result doesn’t do justice to the massive effort that the Gulls put in all game. Goal scorers were Hayden McNeill with two and singles to Murray Ellis-Williams, Jordan Oellermann and Kailey Bone.

In the mens game on Saturday night It was the Drouids too strong for the Warriors by a score of 6-2. Goal scorers for Drouids were Nathan Furphy and Chris Addison with two each and singles to Owen Polderman and Chris Gardner. For the Warriors it was Tom Pettigrew who scored twice.

In the women’s competition it was a tight game between the Warriors and Drouids with a 2-1 score line in favour of the Warriors. Lisa Smith and Tessa Martin scored while for the Drouids it was Lynette Anderson.

On Sunday it was an afternoon game for the Gulls and Aztecs. The Gulls played a great all round team game and came away 3-0 winners. Goal scorers were Gilly Tucker, Michelle Baldwin and Ruth Tucker. Hannah Spragg from Gulls played an impressive game. Round 3 begins this Saturday.
