Power poised late in victory

Wonthaggi maintained its unbeaten start to the season, but it wasn’t without a scare from Morwell.

Cody Macdonald was the major target for Morwell with three goals with Max Linton, Daniel Musil, James Jacobsen, Boyd Bailey and Tyler Brown also giving the Tigers a chance.

Maffra clicked into gear after half time to comfortabl­y account for Traralgon.

Trailing by three points at the long break, the Eagles kicked away with 10 goals to three in the second half to win 14-6 (90) to 7-12 (54).

Mitch Bennett let the scoring with four goals, while Ed and Alex Carr, Danny Butcher, James Read and Daniel O’Brien were also influentia­l for the Eagles.

Seven goals to one in the first term helped Moe on its way to victory over Bairnsdale, 1721 (123) to 7-10 (52).

Former Greater Western Sydney and Carlton player Kristian Jaksch had a day out in front of goal with five majors. James Blaser, Jacob Wood, Harrison Sim, Tyler Baldi, Declan Keilty and Lachlan McLeod also helped Moe to a fast start.

Bairnsdale were more competitiv­e after quarter time, but the damage had been done.

Brayden McCarrey kicked three goals while Link Robinson, Simon Deery, Josh Wykes, Brad Daniel and Harry Gibbs were also among the better players.
