Hawks fall to Parrots

-

An exciting A grade game didn’t fall the way of Drouin against Leongatha on Saturday.

A grade: Drouin 41

Leongatha 45.

As it is in A grade netball, turnovers can win or lose a game. This was certainly the case in this consistently close game.

Drouin took an early lead thanks to the turnovers by Macy Newcombe, Maddi Lumby and Ella Henderson who all put their body on the line for the ball.

A few bad passes slowed the Hawks as well as held balls, mostly due to the unrelenting Parrot pressure.

In attack, Stacie Gardiner and Karina Proctor combined well as usual but had a tough time getting the ball. This was helped in the third quarter by Ella Henderson.

It was a good team effort even without the four points - simply a sign of even better things to come.

Awards: Ella Henderson, Gardiner and Maddi Lumby.

B grade: Drouin 38 lost Leongatha 67.

The new combination in attack of Emily Bethune and Ella East showed promise at the start of this game.

The Hawks all worked hard but some errors proved costly. For the lost to

Stacie to defenders, accurate goalers made rebounds few and far between.

Deb Thomas went out with an injury and it was hard to adjust after her departure. Kate Butler stepped it up another notch and controlled the play up and down the court.

All in all, the score didn’t reflect the game played with equal ball possession.

Awards: Kate Butler, Maddy Caddy and Ella East.

C grade: Drouin

Leongatha 38.

Having worked on game plays, it was good to see the Hawks give it their best despite being plagued with injuries and illness.

The team thanked under 17s Georgia Lightowler and Tess Mapleson for stepping up as well as Chrissy Walsh for her extra shooting practice which was noticed by all.

Awards: Chrissy Walsh and Jess Murray.

Under 17s: Drouin 17 Leongatha 31.

Drouin had a full side back to play – and play they did.

Alanah Jagoe and Lucy Mackellar injected energy and their teammates rose to the challenge to meet their intensity. Both girls worked hard with one-on-one defence to create multiple 17 lost to lost to turnovers.

Georgia Lightowler was fantastic in attack, implementing the correct team structure on the centre pass and playing with intent on the ball.

The midcourt was also relentless in their drive, pushed forwards by the never stopping Holly Cheyne.

Award: Georgia Lightowler.

Under 15s: Drouin 11 Leongatha 41.

After working hard at training, Drouin gave good plays on court.

The team is still learning to get defensive work down court to slow the ball down and create turnovers.

Great work from Alice Waddell in mid court, being aggressive and working hard to win the ball against a very good team.

Award: Alice Waddell.

Under 13s: Drouin 6 Leongatha 42.

The Hawks scored six awesome goals and the club is very proud of their efforts.

It was a tough day on the court but there were great passages of play in patches as the team worked hard all game and never gave up.

Amelia Jarred displayed some great goaling and drive in attack.

Award: Amelia Jarred. lost to lost to
