Tough top-of-table contest for Neerim District

Neerim District Bowling Club played away against top of the ladder Morwell and were soundly beaten with a score of 74 to 126.

Neerim battled hard across the board but Morwell were consistent­ly better.

Ross Pollard (skip), Pat FraserAuri­sch, Tony Thornton and Graeme Wingrove lost to Ron Lyfield’s team 22 to 35.Neerim started well and led 5/ 1 after 4 ends but dropped a 7 on the 6th end and a 4 a short time later to trail 7/ 13 on the 8th end. Morwell maintained the momentum to lead 23/ 9 on the 14th end and 31/ 12 on the 19th end. Neerim won 4 of the last 6 ends including two 4s to go down by 13 shots.

Peter Throup (skip), Angus McGillivra­y, Ray Throup and Karren Sheers lost to Ernie King’s team 21 to 28. Scores were close after 4 ends at 4/ 5 to Morwell’s advantage. Morwell started to take control and led 14/ 6 on the 10th end. They continued to extend their lead and on the 19th end led by 15 shots. Neerim then won 5 of the last 6 ends picking up 7 shots over the last 2 ends to go down by 7 shots.

Peter Brooks, Trevor Kuhnell (skip), Robert Cook and Chris Hogan lost to Nathan Cook’s team 17 to 38. Neerim had a very tough day and were down 9 nil on the 6th end. Neerim started to pick up singles while Morwell were getting multiples to lead by 14 shots on the 14th end. A 7 to Morwell on the 23rd end had their lead out to 28. Neerim finished off well with a 4 and a 3 to go down by 21 shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Jim Fallon, Greg Bond and Colin McKay lost to David Cook’s team 14 to 25. The first 9 ends was a tight struggle with each team only managing singles. Morwell finally broke the shackles with a 4 and by the 13th end led 16/ 5. The rest of the game was even with Morwell still leading by 11 on the 22nd end. Morwell picked up a 4 but Neerim responded with two 2s to go down by 11 shots.

Saturday Division 5 Round 7

Neerim District Bowling Club (2) played at home against Morwell (4) and had a solid win of 81 to 55 with 2 of the 3 rinks up.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Fish Halligan, Neville Cousins and Tom Goodwin just went down to Julie Klein’s team 24 to 26. The close finish was typical of the game all through. Scores were level on the 7th end at 6 all before Morwell got a 4 and a 2. Neerim closed to within 1 after another 4 ends. Morwell eased away to lead by 4 after a series of singles but 4 ends in a row including a 5 and a 4 gave Neerim a 4 shot lead. With victory in sight, Neerim dropped a 5 on the last end to go down by 2 shots.

Mal Collins (skip), John Rochford, Gerry Engelstad and Des Pelly won over Ian Wilson’s team in a close one with a score of 22 to 20. Neerim eased away early but 3 ends in a row to Morwell gave them a 2 shot lead on the 10th end. Neerim won 4 of the next 5 ends to lead by 6. Morwell responded with 4 in a row to lead by 1. Again Neerim won 3 in a row including a 4 to lead by 5 only for Morwell to get back within 1 on the penultimat­e end. Neerim won the last end to win by 2.

Russell Meehan, Cookie Halligan, Mick Talbot and Gerald Winter had a commanding win over Daryl Coleman’s team with a score of 35 to 9. Neerim blasted out of the blocks and led 13/ 3 on the 7th end. Neerim continued to dominate and won 10 ends in a row including a 5 to lead 31/ 6 on the 18th end. The remaining ends were better balanced with Morwell picking up 3 shots to Neerim’s 4 with Neerim finishing with a 26 shot win.

Tuesday Division 2 Round 7

Neerim District Bowling Club played at home against Morwell Club (2) who had their second draw of the season with the scores 61 All.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Fish Halligan, Thelma Schroeder and Graeme Wingrove defeated Betty Burridge’s team 20 to 15. Neerim were down 3/ 8 on the 7th end having won just 2 ends. Things started to pick up but Neerim still trailed 9/ 12 on the 13th end. The game then turned to Neerim’s advantage as they then won 6 of the last 8 ends as they stormed home for a 5 shot win.

Cookie Halligan (skip), Gerald Winter, John Rochford and Neville Cousins lost to Leanne Broadbent’s team 12 to 23. Neerim were in a lot of pain as they had only picked up 3 singles by the 11th end and trailed by 13 shots. The second half of the game was very even with Neerim winning 5 ends with mainly 2s and managed to cut the margin by 2 but went down by 11 shots.

Karren Sheers (skip), Kay Cousins, Jim Fallon and Richard Kerr defeated Cheryl Reynold’s team 29 to 23. A poor start by Neerim had them trailing 2/ 9 on the 5th end. They then won 4 in a row including a 5 and a 4 to lead 14/ 9. Morwell Club fought back and levelled he scores at 15 all on the 13th end. Neerim responded with another 4. A 3 on the 18th end had their lead out to 9. Morwell did not give up and a 4 and a 3 had them trailing by 2 on the penultimat­e end but Neerim finished with another 4 for a 6 shot win.
