Warriors hold top spot

-

Warragul Warriors have triumphed over two more determined foes, holding onto their top spot in the CBL Gippsland Men’s competition.

In a multi-round weekend, the Warriors took on two Central Gippsland powerhouses, Sale and Maffra.

First up was arch-rivals Maffra, where Warragul led the game at half time, 50-48. Both sides showed a fierce determination to win and secure the top spot on the ladder.

A slip in concentration in the third saw the Warriors go down by six, leaving them behind in an otherwise tight game.

A firey and desperate Warriors in the final quarter resulted in a nail biting finish. The game coming down to accuracy across the three-point line, with Mike Santo collecting five from across the line and Jarryd Moss top scoring with six three pointers and 25 points. In the end, Warragul got the win by two points, 81-79.

A young and determined Sale Sonics initially led the game in the first quarter, holding on by a point 14-15. But an impassable Warrior’s defence was the standout leading into half time, keeping the Sonics score to only four points in the second.

The Sonics didn’t let up easily, winning back the third quarter with a ferocious attack. Sale showed accuracy from the three-point line, collecting four in total. Billy Hughes was the saviour for the Sonics, top scoring with 13 points.

Sale had the momentum and were only nine points down going into the final quarter, 38-47. But Warragul once again proved they can keep their heads late in the game, demolishing what was left of the Sonics.

29 points from Marko Kulas obliterated Sale’s defence, followed by Jarryd Moss with 21 points. Final scores were Warragul 72-46 Sale.
