$1.9m upgrade for Sutton St underway

-

Reconstruction and widening of the road and construction of footpaths along two sections on Sutton St, Warragul, one of the town’s busiest streets, is finally underway.

The need for the work that residents had been calling for over a number of years was featured in last Tuesday’s Gazette (January 18).

Expressing delight that work on the two sections – between Bowen and Hope Sts and from Normanby St to Davine St was underway – mayor Michael Leaney said it was no secret the surfaces were past their use-by dates.

We (council) have also heard the call from residents that with increasing foot traffic footpaths were needed, he said.

“Without doubt these two stretches of road were the worst conditioned in Warragul and reconstruction was urgent.

About $1.9 million is being spent on the upgrades that also includes kerb and channel works and improve drainage.

Cr Leaney said it had been a long, difficult and costly process but the work would not have been possible without funding from the Federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure and Road to Recovery programs.

“The thousands of people that use Sutton St each day will welcome the news that works have finally started”.

Roadside drainage works began last month and over coming weeks the major roadworks would start.

Cr Leaney said during the roadworks the road would be temporarily reduced to one lane and asked that drivers follow signage and traffic management directions.

Given favourable weather it is expected the project will be completed by the end of April.
