Baw Baw Budgerigar Society

-

Monday, January 10 was the first meeting of 2022 and the annual general meeting of the Baw Baw Budgerigar Society.

Members heard president John Rowe present his report on the club’s past 12 months and its inability to hold regular monthly meetings as well as participation in show events due to COVID 19.

He was, as all members were, very disappointed that our own Championship Show, which was due to be held last November, was also not able to go ahead for the second year running.

He thanked the executive for their continued work during this time particularly noting the efforts of club secretary Darren Macfarlane who has been putting out two newsletters per month during COVID restrictions.

All positions were declared vacant. John was re-elected president for 2022 with John Mastwyk as vice-president, Darren Macfarlane as secretary and Ewen Slater as treasurer. James Mastwyk, Alex Richardson and Maxine Clark were elected to the committee.

Following the AGM a general meeting was held where Darren and John gave a presentation on the spangle variety of birds indicating that this variety originated in Gippsland and is now present throughout the world.

It is distinguished by its wings being the reverse of the normal budgie in that the flights are white with black edging unlike the normal budgie which has black flights with white or yellow edging. The throat spots are also like a bull’s eye.

A small show was also held for club members with John and James Mastwyk taking home the award for best young bird and Pam Butler won for the best UBC.

Due to selection of birds for the State Adult Championship on Sunday March 6 our next meeting will be held on Monday February 28.

This is a prime opportunity for visitors or persons interested to see all of the varieties of birds that will be on display for selection.

Anyone wishing to attend club meetings is most welcome. They are held on a monthly basis in the old tennis club rooms in Burke St opposite the aquatic centre. COVID restrictions apply. Meetings commence at 7pm and last about two hours, usually with a guest speaker.

If you would like to know more about breeding, showing or would just like to join the club you can make contact via the club’s website https://bawbawbudgerigarsociety.weebly.com or find us via our Facebook page.

The next monthly meeting will be on Monday February 28.
