Neerim go down by a bowl

Saturday Division 2 Round 8 Neerim District Bowling Club played at home against Drouin (2) and went down in a tight battle 98 to 103.

Ross Pollard (skip), Jim Fallon, Ray Throup and Graeme Wingrove lost to Brian Thorpe’s teams 20 to 22. Neerim were in heaps of trouble when they trailed 2/ 13 on the 9th end but a 5 on the 8th end gave them some momentum as they set about clawing back the lead and a 3 on the 17th end had scores level at 17 all. Drouin eased ahead by 4 but Neerim closed to within 1 on the 24th end only for Drouin to pick up a single to win by 2 shots.

Peter Throup (skip), Pat FraserAuri­sch, Ray Watts and Karren Sheers defeated Bruce Andrew’s team 27 to 20. Another tight start with one the difference after 7 ends. Drouin eased ahead to lead by 6 on the 12th end. Neerim then won 7 straight including three 3s to lead by 9 on the 19th end. Drouin managed to cut the difference by 2 at the end with Neerim winning by 7 shots.

Peter Brooks, Trevor Kuhnell (skip), Robert Cook and Tony Thornton defeated Phil Jarred’s team 29 to 26. Scoring was tight early but Drouin had a run of 4 consecutiv­e ends to lead 11/ 4 on the 9th end. Neerim bounced back winning 5 in a row to lead 16/ 11. A 6 to Drouin had them back in front but Neerim immediatel­y levelled the scores and from then on it was wrestle to the end but a 5 and 3 to Neerim on the 23 and 24th ends gave them the break as they finished with a 3 shot win.

Greg Bond and Colin McKay lost to Colin Jeffrey’s team 21 to 34. Neerim led by 4 after 5 ends but Drouin started to get the upper hand and two 4s had their lead out to 9 on the 13th end. Drouin continued to ease ahead and led by 17 on the 22nd end. A 6 to Neerim reversed the trend but Drouin went on to win by 13 shots.

Saturday Division 5 Round 8 Neerim District Bowling Club (2) played away against Churchill and went down in another tight game 68 to 71 with the result coming down to the result of last bowl of the game.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Fish Halligan, Neville Cousins and Tom Goodwin lost to Chris Thomas’s team 15 to 27. Neerim dropped a 4 on the 4th end but were holding their own and levelled the scores at 7 all on the 9th end. Churchill started to get on top winning the next 4 to lead by 7. Neerim were only managing singles to Churchills multiples as Churchill continued to extend their lead and ran out winners by 12 shots.

Mal Collins (skip), John Rochford, Gerry Engelstad and Des Pelly defeated Vern Hargave’s team 35 to 14. Neerim had a spectacula­r start and led 16 nil on the 10th end before Churchill finally got on the board. Neerim continued the pressure and consecutiv­e 4s had them leading 29/ 2. A run of 3 ends to Churchill including a 6 cut the margin to 17 but Neerim settled to win the last 3 ends for a 21 shot win.

Russell Meehan, Cookie Halligan, Mick Talbot and Gerald Winter lost to Shirley Turner’s team 18 to 30. A shocker of a start for Neerim being down 15 nil on the 5th end. They finally settled and worked their way back to trail 15/ 19 on the 17th end but could not maintain the momentum as Churchill finished off the stronger to win by 12 shots.

Tuesday Division 2 Round 8 Neerim District Bowling Club played at home against Morwell (2) and won 79 to 54 with all rinks up.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Fish Halligan, Thelma Schroeder and John Rochford defeated Julie Klein’s team 29 to 21. Neerim trailed 2/ 7 on the first end only to win 6 of the next 7 ends to lead 19/ 9. Morwell closed to within 5 on the 17th end but a 5 to Neerim followed and went on to win by 8 shots.

Cookie Halligan (skip), Russell Meehan, Gerald Winter and Jim Schroeder defeated Palma McNeil’s team 26 to 13. A 4 on the first end was a great start for Neerim and they continued on collecting mainly multilples while only conceding singles and led 13 to 4 on the 10th end. Morwell got to within 2 on the 14th end but Neerim steadied and won 6 of the last 7 ends including a 5 on the last end giving them a 13 shot win.

Karren Sheers (skip), Kay Cousins, Neville Cousins and Richard Kerr defeated Shirley Kolcze’s team 24 to 20. Neerim started strongly and led 12/ 4 on the 7th end. Morwell closed to within 2 over the next 2 ends but Neerim responded and had the lead back to 8 on the 14th end. Morwell was not done with and with the help of a 5 only trailed by 2 on the penultimat­e end but Neerim then got a 2 for a 4 shot win.
