Once in a lifetime Albatross

- By Jack Morgan

A Drouin golfer has pulled off the shots of his life, scoring an Albatross at the Drouin Country Club, a feat considered even rarer than a hole-in-one.

Matthew Guy scored a two on a par five hole, something that has only been achieved twice during competition at Drouin.

Guy has been playing golf for 20 years, and never expected to make two perfect shots that would ultimately land him in the club’s history books.

“I haven’t had a hole-in-one or anything like that, so that’s definitely the best individual thing I’ve done in golf for sure,” Guy said.

Teeing off from the seventh, it began with a superb drive that left Guy 149 metres from the green.

“It landed on the right-hand side of the edge of the fairway, and it got a big bounce, there’s a big dam on the right and it rolled past that,” Guy said.

The Drouin local used an eight iron to finish the job, putting a left to right fade on the ball that began to bounce about six feet short of the hole.

“Even when it was bouncing, I still didn’t think it was actually going to go in, I just thought I’m going to have a nice, easy eagle putt here.

“I actually turned away to put my club back in my bag and my mate was there and he jumped out saying ‘It’s gone in, it’s gone in!’.

“I was probably a little bit shocked to start with, and then my mates going ‘It’s an albatross! It’s an albatross! Not even I’ve got one of them,’ and then we had a little hug and cheered and got a bit excited,” Guy said.

The odds of scoring an Albatross are more than a million to one, according to golf experts.

Only two other Drouin members have recorded two on a par five, Paul Thaw and Shane Dwyer.

While Guy admits there was a bit of luck involved, he hopes another will come on the weekend.

“This week’s the start of the club championships, so it’d be handy to have it in the club champs, it would really help,” he said.
