Human Libraries in Harmony

-

Harmony Week is celebrated during Monday 21 - Sunday 27 March 2022 as time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism and since 1999, more than 80,000 Harmony Week events have been held in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.

Throughout March this year, your local libraries are celebrating Harmony Week by hosting a number of free events.

On Tuesday 15 March at 6pm Author Ali Mc will join us at Mirboo North Library to share stories about his new book Analog Iran. In 2019, photographer Ali MC spent four weeks documenting the diversity of Iran through black and white 35mm film.

Using a fixed-lens manual camera, Ali captured the mood of the city’s streets, a dichotomy of gracious hospitality and bleak desperation of a people living under severe economic sanctions and the constant threat of war.

From Tuesday March 17 to Monday March 28, libraries across Baw Baw, Bass Coast and South Gippsland will be hosting a number of Human Library events. Following the successful Human Libraries events throughout Myli - My Community Library branches in 2021, your local library has again teamed with the Gippsland Multicultural Strategic Plan Partnership Group to host diverse people in our communities to share their stories. Each Human Library event provides you with the unique opportunity to join in conversation and story-sharing with a culturally and linguistically diverse person.

The Human Library is an idea first started in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000. It aims to address people’s prejudices by helping them to talk to those they would not normally meet with the objective being to ‘unjudge someone’.

Volunteers from our multi-culturally diverse community, supported by a facilitator and a library staff member, will share their stories in a relaxed setting with plenty of time for questions and reflections.

Sharing stories can be life-affirming for the teller and a journey somewhere new for the listener. Refreshments will be provided. Upcoming Human Library events will be hosted on: Thu, Mar 17, 10:00 AM at Drouin Library; Thu, Mar 17, 12:30 PM at Warragul Library; Thu, Mar 17, 3:00 PM at Mirboo North Library; Mon, Mar 21, 10:00 AM at Foster Library; Mon, Mar 21, 1:00 PM at Leongatha Library; Mon, Mar 21, 3:00 PM at Korumburra Library; Mon, Mar 28, 10:00 AM at Inverloch Library; and Mon, Mar 28, 3:00 PM at San Remo Library.
