Waves to wow at Wesley

-

Combining storytelling, movement and splashes of humour, solo theatre work “Waves” is set to wow audiences of all ages at Wesley of Warragul on Friday at 7.30pm.

Created and performed by Alice Mary Cooper, “Waves” pays tribute to the pioneering Australian female swimmers of the early 1900s.

It is an historical fictional tale of Elizabeth Moncello, a daughter of immigrants growing up on Gabo Island in the 1930s. After teaching herself to swim by emulating fish, penguins, and dolphins, Elizabeth goes on to gain fame as the unofficial inventor of the butterfly stroke.

This is an extraordinary tale of a life fully lived. Although it is purely fictional, people like Elizabeth existed but were not recorded by history’s grand narrative.

Based on the original direction by award-winning Scottish theatre director Gill Robertson, “Waves” is about having the courage, desire and determination to swim against a tide of expectation.

Written by Edinburgh-based actor and theatre-maker Alice Mary Cooper, it started as a short story written for French magazine Jean Marie. It was influenced by her own love of swimming and by doing laps in a pool named “The Fanny Durack” in her hometown of Sydney and has been wowing audiences, both young and old, since 2014.

“It is a dream come true to bring this show to the Koori lands of rural and regional Victoria,” Alice said. “I was inspired to make Waves after learning about (Victorian) Gabo Island and it means so much to be able to bring it ‘back’ to where it began. I really can’t wait to go on tour with RAV and share this story with new audiences.”

“Waves” is for audiences aged eight years and over.

Tickets are $30 for general, $27.50 for concession, $10 for under 16s and $60 for a family.
