Warragul champions decided

The finals of three Warragul Bowling Club championsh­ip events were contested over the past week.

The mixed pairs final started on Sunday, March 6 before being washed out after five ends. It concluded on Thursday.

It saw Peter and Janette Gallasch taking on Ian Belling and Ciska Axford. Peter and Janette led 9/2 when the game was called off on the first day.

On resumption, they got two shots before Ian and Ciska got two twos in a row to trail 6/11. Peter and Janette got two, four and three to zoom to a commanding 20/6 lead.

Ian found himself five down on the next end with a bowl to play, and drew a great shot to keep the match alive. Peter and Janette got one before a rare “no score end” with the umpire’s measure unable to split the two bowls.

Peter and Janette got one and five to close the match out 27/7 with two ends not required to be played.

This is the fourth mixed pairs title for Peter and Janette.

The women’s triples final saw Janette Gallasch (skip), Elsie Hefford and Gabrielle Draisma against Pat Hammond (skip), Kerrie Currie and Freda Lay.

Pat’s team got off to a good start and led 5/1 after four ends. Janette got three before Pat got one and two to lead by four again.

The teams traded blows over the next six ends, the scores tied at 11-all after 13 ends. Janette’s team got two threes to lead by six, and Pat’s team picked up a big five to bridge the gap to one shot.

Janette’s team bounced back and won the last two ends to eventually win by seven shots, 23/16.

The third event completed was the men’s drawn pairs final on Friday. It saw Bill Clappers (skip) and David Ferguson taking on Jim Moyle (skip) and Bill Clark.

Jim and Bill got off to a flyer and led 5/0 after three ends. Bill and David got two and Jim got one. Jim was holding four shots and the set on the next end before Bill played a terrific bowl to get one.

Bill and David got four of their own on the last end to win the first set.

The momentum stayed with the pair in the second set as they raced to a 9/0 lead after four ends.

Jim and Bill got two ones, but were seven down with only one end to play. This saw the end of the game, with Bill and David winning in straight sets.
