Quality Jerseys at 60th fair

-

The Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club held its 60th Annual Jersey Fair last Tuesday.

Held at Warragul’s Logan Park, the event displayed some of the best cows in Victoria.

Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club president Reece Attenborough said although this year’s fair saw fewer participants than usual, the quality of entries had continued to rise.

“The quality was probably better than last year, it was another great day... we had a really good crowd,” he said.

“Everything went well. You always hope for good weather, and it was nice - no rain.”

Mr Attenborough acknowledged Rob and Kerrie Anderson, Toni Attenborough, and Luke Wallace for their work organising the event.

“It takes quite a number of people to run it,” he said

“There’s a lot of different jobs to do.”

The stand-out competitor this year was the winner of senior champion cow - Windy Ways Galaxies ‘Dawn’, owned by Frank Walsh and Cherrylock Cattle Co. Dawn was also awarded supreme champion, cow in milk born 2014 or before, R Battley Memorial champion type, and the Vic Wallace Memorial best udder production cow.

Dawn and her calf, Bontino Dawn, also won the dam and daughter category. This is the second year in a row Dawn has won the Vic Wallace Memorial best udder of the show, senior champion, and supreme champion.

Philmar Dairy Company, owned by Mark and Phillipa Flemming, took out premier exhibitor this year. The company brought eight cows to the fair.

Mr Attenborough said their success was due to their “very consistent and high quality” cows.

This year’s judge was John Gardiner of Avonlea Holsteins.

Mr Gardiner has a wealth of experience, having judged similar competitions throughout Australia. He has even judged competitions in New Zealand. In 1998 Mr Gardiner judged the Holsteins at Sydney Royal.

This year’s event was supported by the Central Sire Co Op Ltd, Rabobank, Burra foods, Lely Centre Gippsland, Jersey Australia. Results:
