Huge win for Drouin Hawks

-

Drouin had a six-goal win against Traralgon in A grade to boost confidence for the season ahead.

A grade: Drouin 43 defeated Traralgon 37

What a game to watch. Even the coach got sucked in to relaxing and enjoying the girls in action.

The Hawks came off the court at halftime pumped after a fabulous second quarter. Traralgon had other ideas, stepping up their defence and showing they came to play.

The fourth quarter was even and the Hawks fought to hold onto their lead.

April Bethune worked tirelessly with Kim Diston in the defensive ring and picked off balls as they were coming down court.

Ruby Pratt had her work cut out for her and she made it look easy, hitting the ring and opening up the attacking end.

Great effort from the girls who all played a great game and worked for each other to get another four points on the board.

Awards: April Bethune and Ruby Pratt.

B grade: Drouin 26 lost to Traralgon 63

It was a tough start against Traralgon who are a very strong, competitive side. They read the Hawks play well and the girls played the ball into their hands too often.

The Hawks need to step onto the court with confidence and trust in each other which will come soon.

It was another sensational game by Ali McArthur, always helping her teammates and never giving up. Her foot tells the story of a hard fought out game.

From struggling last week to getting an award, shooting star Jodie Proctor was back. Continuously talking, encouraging and telling her partners in the goal ring where to move.

Plenty of other great efforts from the girls who will keep working hard at training and the results will come.

Awards: Ali McArthur and Jodie Proctor.

C grade: Drouin 29 defeated Traralgon 27

The Hawks got their first win for the season - and it was a great sight to see.

From the start, it was going to be a close game. Traralgon got an early three-goal lead. Soon after, it was goalfor-goal and would remain so for the first half.

Some changes on court, swapping Georgia Lightowler and Emily Bethune in wing attack and goal attack, helped movement in the goal ring, and Sarah Sharpe and Grace Henderson into goal keeper and goal defence respectively.

With the ends of the court covered, Drouin started to push. The third quarter saw Drouin score 11 goals to Traralgon’s two. A lot of the hard yards were done by Ruby Pritchett who was absolutely flying in wing defence.

The heat and fatigue was setting in by the final quarter, going from a seven-goal lead down to two. The Hawks hung on and the whistle couldn’t come fast enough.

Awards: Ruby Pritchett, Georgia Lightowler and Chrissie Walsh.

17 and under: Drouin 17 lost to Traralgon 43

Unfortunately, the Hawks had a loss this week.

The girls didn’t focus on the score but on working through the play at their own pace.

Although the scoreboard didn’t show it, the girls continued to show the skills they have been learning at training out on the court and gave them a good crack during passages of play. Zoe Curtis filled in as the team only had the seven players.

This team will continue to train hard and learn new concepts to become even stronger for the game against Gulls. They still played a good game given the circumstances.

Awards: Tess Mapleson and Tilly Carroll.

From one extreme to another, the girls had a tough job in the sun against Traralgon.

Lots of amazing passages of play between Jamieson Hudson and Leilani Lightowler in the first quarter had Bella Tangipo and Sienna Arbon getting lots of opportunity in the ring.

The defensive end mirrored that dedication with Zoe Curtis and Mylie Stoll getting in some great deflections.

Unfortunately, the Hawks couldn’t replicate the first quarter throughout the game, but kept the intensity up nonetheless. Some amazing passages of play and plenty of possession.

Awards: Jamieson Hudson and Bella Tangipo.

13 and under: Drouin 12 def by Traralgon 31

The Hawks came up against a strong Traralgon team. Amber Hammond, Emmerson Kneebone and Chloe Walsh worked tirelessly all game and did an amazing job at keeping the side to 31 goals.

Skye Norman worked hard all game, driving hard down the court and also creating many turnovers.

Amelia Jarred moved well in the attacking end, especially in the last quarter in goal attack. Overall it was a great game by the little Hawkers.

Awards: Amelia Jarred and Skye Norman.
