Greyhounds strike gold

-

Success can be a fickle thing in greyhound racing, not that Glenn and Grant Pask and their best mate Jamie Baxter seem to be minding at the moment.

The brothers and Baxter, all from Longwarry, recently struck gold with their dogs Vice Grip and Rostered Off, who placed first and third respectively in the Group 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup final last month.

It was the group's third attempt at winning the $150,000 to-the-winner Cup final, going all the way back to 2007.

Together they established the Four Frothys Syndicate, a greyhound ownership group that has found a remarkable streak of victories thus far.

Grant Pask said it was their local ties that had sowed the seeds of their ultimate prize.

"It all started through the [Longwarry] footy club back in 2007, we all decided to get a few dogs and it all went from there," he said.

The group's first taste of success came with their dog Decathalon, who finished second in the 2007 Perth Cup final in an event that ignited their passion for the sport.

Things really exploded for the Four Frothys Syndicate however with their dog Bells Are Ringin, who incredibly won the 2016 Sandown Cup at 50 to one odds.

"She was a little thing, but she got a great run and it just all went our way at the right time," Pask said.

Bells Are Ringin would be a precursor for things to come, as her litter brother Ring The Bell won the National Distance Championship for the group in the same year.

While those events were amazing for the group, there was something special about finally achieving victory where it all began.

"It was pretty quiet over there this year because of COVID-19, but they've got great setups and it was a pretty special time to finally win it after 15 years," Pask said.

In all their triumphs though, Pask said the group hasn't forgotten their local Victorian roots.

"A few of the Perth boys were giving it to us Victorians before the race, it was really nice to give it right back," he said.

"A lot of bloody hard work has gone into this, it costs $5,000 just to get a dog on the track so it's really nice to have the work pay off."
