Input sought for new precinct

-

A project reference group has been appointed by Baw Baw Shire to help guide design, advocacy and delivery of the proposed $30 million culture and connection precinct in Warragul.

But, council is still seeking community membership for the group.

The project, incorporating a new library, is the largest in council's history but is dependent on federal and state governments contributing $10 million each to the development. Council has already pledged $10 million to the project.

The appointed PRG members include shire councillors and project managers as well as representatives of West Gippsland Regional Libraries Corporation, West Gippsland Arts centre, Baw Baw Arts Alliance, Regional Development Victoria and Baw Baw Shire Ratepayers and Citizens Association.

The group will provide local feedback and recommendations to council.

Cr Annemarie McCabe said members of the group were genuinely interested in the development.

"The PRG will be planning in the background so that when the funding comes about, they will be ready to go," she said.

Council is continuing to seek two community members to join the committee, with second round applications closing on May 12.

The precinct will include include a multi-level facility with new library featuring reading and study zones, a gallery and cultural space, community meeting rooms, co-working areas, cafe and rooftop terrace.

Mayor Michael Leaney said appointment of the PRG was another step forward in the process.

"We're now in a position to commence critical planning meetings with the architect and design team which will give the project real momentum," he said.

Cr Leaney said community members on the PRG would ensure a fair and equitable representation of local voices.

"We strongly encourage any interested community members to submit an application to join the inner-workings of council's largest project ever. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to make a direct impact on a major piece of community infrastructure," he said.

Community members who previously applied do not need to re-apply and will be considered in the final pool of candidates.

Council is seeking community members who can provide experience in what a modern library and community hub should provide and represent youth interests, early childhood, commerce and business or the arts.
