Warragul Community House

-

Last week, Sue (not her real name) wanted to access emails on her phone and couldn’t get it to work.

Sue rang Warragul Community House, made an appointment, spent 20 minutes with a volunteer and left with a smile on her face.

Technology help is one of the ways that volunteers contribute at Warragul Community House and there’s no charge for the assistance.

We simply ask for a smile and acknowledgement of the support we offer the community.

Volunteers at WCH tell us that they love being ‘paid’ for the jobs they do.

We can’t pay in money, but we can ‘pay’ in building experience, building your skills and building your friendships as part of our team. We also ‘pay’ in occasional chocolate!

Barb comes to work on the front desk every Monday and Friday afternoons.

Heather comes in each Tuesday and Thursday to work with some of the social groups.

Kaye, Shirley, Faye, Lois, Karina, Kalai, Kim, Rachel, Annie, Heather, John, Linda, Michael, Dick and Sheena are our weekly volunteers and assist in classes, on the front desk, with technology, with accessing information.

There’s also Jessica, Diane, Teresa, Farhat, Quentin, Kate, Sunil and Robert who are the members of the Committee of Governance.

Each one of our volunteers give us time, energy, thinking and skills in an area of interest.

Some of them come in with skills to share, some come in to learn new skills and some come in to join our community just because they like us!

That’s what we do at Warragul Community House.

We invite people to join our team, we offer training in areas such as computer use, customer interaction and we offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Our volunteers are such a vital part of our daily operation!

We know how important it is to be part of a team.

We also know how important it is to get value from your volunteering, so before you start, we meet and talk about what skills you would like to learn and what you can offer.

We make sure you are placed in a spot that will best suit you.

We make sure that you work with an experienced volunteer to ‘learn the ropes’.

We make sure that we train you in our procedures.

We make sure that we talk to you about the expectations of an employer if you are looking to get work. And we offer you a reference if you are looking for work.

We love people who have a willingness to learn, have some flexibility and are reliable and (this is really important) like to share some occasional chocolate!

If you’d like to hear a cheery ‘good morning’ with a warm welcoming tone and be part of a wonderful team, it’s time to ring Kate and ask if we have spot for you! Ph 56236032.
