Gulls no match for Parrots

-

Leongatha proved too strong for Warragul across all six grades at Leongatha on Saturday.

A grade: Warragul 33 lost to Leongatha 66

It was always going to be challenging with a couple of late withdrawals, and the Gulls were no match for a very tidy Leongatha side.

However, to their credit, the Gulls didn’t go down without a fight.

With a switch up of ends, Ella Rees was a great target in the goal ring. Alex Cole, Bronte Harvey and Becky O’Halloran worked well in defence.

Renee Cook, Sienna Green and Jaime Perry continued to be options throughout the midcourt. Unfortunately, Warragul didn’t come away with the four points.

Ella Rees and Alex Cole.

B grade: Warragul 22 lost to Leongatha 61

Unfortunately, the Gulls were no match for the strong Leongatha side. But that didn’t stop them fighting to the final whistle.

With Cara McIntosh, Pippa Cook and Becky O’Halloran fighting for every ball in the defence end, they created opportunities for the goalers who were unable to convert.

C grade: Warragul 13 lost to Leongatha 27

A tough game for the Gulls with some key players out. Again, they were no match for a very strong Leongatha.

Grace Cant and Talarna Olsen were able to keep the Gulls in the game with their strong defensive pressure. Under 17 player Charli Hendrikse was instrumental in getting the ball to the goalers.

Best on: Charli Hendrikse. Awards: Talarna Olsen and Grace Cant.

17 and under: Warragul 18 lost to Leongatha 27

This game started off close until Leongatha pulled away in the second quarter.

The Gulls came back fighting in the third quarter with great defensive intercepts from midcourter Ava McGarrity and strong rebounds from both defenders in the circle.

Maci James played an important role in scoring some crucial goals to keep the girls in the game.

However, it was too little too late, with the girls going into the last quarter eight goals down. They still managed to finish strongly, only losing the last quarter by one goal.

15 and under: Warragul 11 lost to Leongatha 64

It was a challenging day but heads remained high.

Their effort and determination was noticed throughout all four quarters.

There were some positive passages of play at both ends of the court and the awards reflected this.

Awards: Felicity Prestidge was awarded best on court for her consistent defensive skills.

Alishia Smith rewarded for her defence in the ring and pressure in the midcourt.

Elysia Dalton received recognition for her movement and conversion in goals.

13 and under: Warragul 16 lost to Leongatha 28

The Gulls played a well contested game against a strong Leongatha side.

Although they were not able to maintain the pace for four quarters, the team showed great signs of the quality team they are becoming.
