LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM US

-

Streaming, Netflix

A breakout hit during the pandemic in the US, endearing Australian reality series Love on the Spectrum struck a chord with viewers who have had enough of scantily clad contestants, sex and scandal in their dating shows. Now, the surprise success has a localised version, which follows a group of young Americans living on the autism spectrum, on the lookout for love, and the unique challenges they face.

Warm-hearted, wholesome and insightful, the docuseries lets its subjects speak for themselves. The participants make it clear: no matter whether you’re on the spectrum or not, everyone is different, and dating and relationships can be difficult at the best of times.

As with any reality program, casting is key. Original series creator Cian O’Clery also helms this iteration and clearly understands the importance of a charming, colourful and diverse group taking part. The cleverly cast crew includes Subodh, who exclaims he “hasn’t

dated in 33 years”, 26-year-old animation expert Dani, animal lover Abbey, 23, anxietyprone James, 34, and blogger Kaelynn, 24.

There’s also a new aspect to this adaptation – the group includes Steve, a 63-year-old man who has only recently been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. His search for a “lovely lady” to share his life with is a touching addition.

And so, with the help of autism expert Jennifer Cook, the cast embark on an exciting new chapter of their lives – seeing them make connections and find new facets of themselves along the way is an absolute joy.
