Mixed results for Hawks

-

Drouin netballers had two wins when they hosted Moe on Saturday.

A grade: Drouin 34 lost to Moe 61

If you could forget five minutes of a game, or rewind it for a do over, the Drouin girls would have jumped at the chance.

The scoreline didn’t reflect the great game the Hawks had. They were even with Moe at half-time but a five minute brain fade in the third quarter, of which Moe thoroughly capitalised on, was to blame.

But the Hawks didn’t drop their heads. After a quick mental reset, all the A grade girls knuckled down and worked hard for the rest of the game.

Defender Kym Diston is never one to be pushed around, so Moe had to work hard to prevent her from ruining all their game plans.

In attack, Stacie Gardiner was flying shooting long bombs and close ones; supported by the strong efforts of the attack end.

Awards: Stacie “Shooting for the Stars” Gardiner and Kym “Can’t Hold Me Back” Diston.

B grade: Drouin 38 lost to Moe 49 The Hawks did all they could to challenge Moe, but in the end, you just can’t grow overnight.

Moe had some very tall goalers which the defenders fought hard against all day. Ali Macarthur, never one to drop her head, worked relentlessly with Chelsea DeRiter and Maddy Caddy to minimise the damage and make the most of every turnover their defence end got.

Ruby Pritchett was welcomed back into the team with wide arms. Her crucial pressure in wing defence cannot be underestimated.

It was brilliant to see Liv Konstanty back in the maroon and gold, consistently finding space and making plays in wing attack.

In the goal ring, Jodie Proctor and Tess Mapleson worked swiftly and precisely to score - having each other’s back as often as possible. It will be great to see this rematch later in the season!

Awards: Ali “Jumping Higher” Macarthur and Tess “Chatterbox” Mapleson.

C grade: Drouin 34 defeated Moe 30 In a game that could have gone either way depending on the whistle, Drouin fought hard and got the win.

Moe took the lead from the start, leaving the Hawks down by five at quarter time.

Kate Butler, in her first game back post “Jimmy and O”, let it be known that she is a force to be reckoned with - helping Drouin out in the slightly depleted attack end. Her movement down the court allowed the goalers to fight hard against strong Moe defenders.

In the midcourt, Alice McKellar worked hard all day supported by Bailey Fleming and Darcy Appleby driving down the court. It was a dramatic game with some injuries and time called - Jess Murray even managing a little sit down on the court and Sarah Sharpe nearly taking out the ball and her own player.

It was the Hawks’ spirit which got them the four points together with hard defence down the court and stunning drives by Emily Bethune.

Awards: Kate “Fast Feed” Butler and Emily “Leading the Drives” Bethune.

17 and under: Drouin 33 defeated Moe 17

The girls started off the game very strong - with under 15 fill-ins Jamieson and LuLu slotting in perfectly.

The girls aimed for pressure on the ball, and that was what they did.

From the first whistle, the whole team put heaps of pressure on, causing many turnovers and then converting these into goals.

Each quarter the girls’ communication and strength grew on court and so did the score.

It was a tough decision to give out the awards as it was a whole team effort and could have gone to anyone.

Awards: Amy Navas, Holly Cheyne and Allanah Jagoe.

15 and under: Drouin 9 lost to Moe 30

It was fantastic weather for netball but unfortunately not the 15s day. With sickness hitting the girls hard, some fresh combinations were tried.

Although the scoreline didn’t reflect the game, the girls kept their heads high and fought to the end, holding a lot of possession. Unfortunately, the Hawks couldn’t convert turnovers into goals.

The Moe defence end put a lot of pressure on the new shooting combination of Bella Tangipo and Mia Trewin. However, they fought for every goal with the patience of Adah Dennis and leadership of Jamison Thomas shining through. Thrown in the deep end, Kaylee Norman, Chloe Walsh and Leilani Lightowler rotated through the defensive circle and worked together well. All three, displaying their athleticism and getting countless deflections or intercepts.

Little pocket rocket Tayla Mitchelutti was on fire and made the defence job that much easier by supplying endless pressure around the ring and bringing the ball down court for the attackers.

No win this week, but so many improvements and combinations to think about.

Awards: Jamieson Thomas, Kaylee Norman and Tayla Michelutti.

13 and under: Drouin 8 lost to Moe 20

The Hawks came up against a strong opposition in Moe but managed to stop the score blowing out - and worked hard to keep themselves in the game.

They created a lot of turnovers but just couldn’t convert.

Amber Hammond had a great game, creating turnovers and really limiting her opponent. It was a very strong defensive game and everyone talked and kept moving all game.

Dillon Jagoe worked hard on movement around the court, making sure her player didn’t get any fast breaks.

Awards: Amber Hammond and Dillon Jagoe.
