Win keeps Gulls in hunt

Warragul is one win and percentage outside the “top five” after a four-goal win over Maffra at Burke St on Saturday.

A grade: Warragul 40 defeated Maffra 36

The Gulls knew they had to win and came out firing. With a switch of ends, Ella Rees proved to be a great target for the whole game.

The midcourter­s worked tirelessly, whilst the defenders creating turnovers.

If the Gulls are to be finals contenders, they need to be consistent for four quarters and reduce turnovers. Awards: Ella Rees and Alex Cole.

B grade: Warragul 36 lost to Maffra 48

A hard fought game against Maffra saw the Gulls go down by 12 goals.

Strong defensive pressure and fantastic feeding into the ring was not enough to beat a stronger Maffra side.

Best: Lily Sheehan. Awards: Naomi Allardyce and Cara Gavin. C grade: Warragul 28 lost to Maffra 37

The Gulls were not able to come away with the win but their hard work on the court did not go unnoticed.

Welcoming back Kim Weller into the side made a huge difference in both the attacking and defensive ends.

Talarna Olsen made the Maffra goalers work for every goal and Georgia Lyons put immense pressure on their midcourt throughout the game.

17 and under: Warragul 35 lost to Maffra 57

The Gulls started off slowly which let Maffra create a large lead.

A strong third quarter saw the Gulls win it by two goals, but it was just too late.

Despite some great goaling connection­s and defensive work, it wasn’t the Gulls’ day.

15 and under: Warragul 13 lost to Maffra 75

It was a tough day of netball for the Gulls.

The team’s best on Lainie Gowans displayed great defence and skill in the midcourt.

Arabell Looby and Alisha Smith also received awards for their relentless determinat­ion against a skilled Maffra side. 13 and under: Warragul 24 lost to Maffra 44

The Gulls played a great game with effort and determinat­ion.

It was also great to see all players present after illness has resulted in many absent over the last few weeks.

Audrey Simpson was strong in goals and was rewarded with best on court.

She was well supported by Finlay Heenan who was instrument­al in the midcourt, along with Zaria Dalton who worked tirelessly all game.
