Poowong storm home for three point win

THRILLING under 16 contests highlighte­d the lower grades in round eight of Ellinbank District football.

Poowong stormed home to take a three-point win over Lang Lang, 7-10 (52) to 7-7 (49).

The Magpies booted three goals while keeping the Tigers to one behind in the final quarter to clinch a come from behind win.

Yarragon continued its strong form, prevailing over Longwarry by just one goal.

The Panthers overcame a slow start and peppered away across the middle periods of the game before holding on to win 4-13 (37) to 4-7 (31) to join the Crows as contenders.

Trafalgar put in a gallant effort in going down to Neerim-Neerim South.

The Cats had more opportunit­ies but couldn't put the Bloods away until late in the contest, winning 8-15 (63) to 4-3 (27).

The Bloods were within five points late in the third term, before the Cats kicked away with four final quarter goals.

Ellinbank were big winners over Buln Buln, 15-17 (107) to 1-5 (11).

The Lyrebirds held firm in the third term, conceding just one goal, but six goals in the second quarter followed by another five majors in the fourth proved telling.

Matches in the under 18s were one-sided affairs, with Neerim-Neerim South enjoying a big win over Ellinbank.

The Cats clicked into gear following a slow start, with neither side managing a goal in the first term.

Matt Roberts added another bag, booting eight goals as the Cats kicked away to win 15-13 (103) to 2-2 (14).

Buln Buln comfortabl­y accounted for Lang Lang.

Keeping its opposition goalless delivered the result for the Lyrebirds, who won 5-9 (39) to 0-3 (3).

Longwarry comfortabl­y accounted for Yarragon, 9-12 (66) to 4-1 (25).

It was a gallant effort from the Panthers, who had many players doubling up, but the Crows were too strong.
