Yarragon amendment makes way for development
Yarragon residents will have an opportunity to comment on a proposed planning scheme amendment that if approved, will make way for more than 300 new residential lots in Yarragon-Leongatha Rd.
Council considered a planning application for a 304 lot residential development in September last year. The application also sought to rezone the land from farming zone to neighbourhood residential zone.
Land development consultants Millar Merrigan submitted the application on behalf of the developer who committed to maintaining the rural character of the town.
The Deloraine homestead on the property will be protected in the development.
Planners said the development would increase the attractiveness of Yarragon as a place to invest for business and social services for the wider community.
The development includes a 304 multi-lot residential subdivision and a super-lot earmarked for an aged care facility or lifestyle village.
Also included are two major drainage assets to reduce and divert flooding from properties on Campbell St, Market St, Murray St, Burnett
St and lots fronting Princes Hwy. ublic parks will feature throughout the estate.
The development also will include design guidelines for new homes to ensure the rural character of Yarragon is maintained.
Council has prepared the planning scheme amendment, which is open for public comment.
Community members also can talk to shire officers and view the amendment at a consultation session at the Yarragon Public Hall on June 27, from 4pm to 6.30pm.
Mayor Michael Leaney said the planning scheme amendment and planning permit were submitted together for approval to allow for the best possible outcome for the community and to ensure the land rezoning was compatible with development plans.
"This amendment is important because it will provide for additional residential use and development of land in Yarragon, while protecting a site of heritage significance and ensuring new homes fit the Yarragon's rural character," he said.
The proposed amendment is on public exhibition for community feedback until July 11.
