Local students recognised
Two local residents were recognised earlier this month at the eighth annual Chisholm Education Awards.
Brooke Thompson was awarded Vocational Student of the Year and Jonathan Wolfe received the Bill Norling Award for Outstanding Automotive Apprentice for his achievements as a mature-aged heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology student.
The awards evening, held at Hotel Chadstone on June 1 celebrated the achievements of staff and students from Melbourne's southeast across the Institute's courses and programs.
Vocational award recipient Brooke Thompson, of Longwarry and is enrolled in Certificate IV in Disability. She was recognised for making her mark at Chisholm at the awards ceremony and wishes to use her certificate to work in the disability sector and become a guest speaker. Her goal is to spread information about how much people with disabilities can offer the community.
"I have disabilities myself... I chose this course because I want to help other people who have disabilities," Ms Thompson explained.
"I'm still surprised and shocked that I actually got the award."
She said that Chisholm has been a supportive environment and her teachers and friends were happy to see her win the award.
"When I was going through Chisholm it was during COVID lockdowns and most of my classes were on Zoom... they told me all the time that there was support if I ever needed it," Ms Thompson said.
Mr Wolfe, of Bunyip, was previously an engineer in Kenworth before deciding to move away from the desk and pursue a certificate at Chisholm. He is currently completing an apprenticeship at Hallam Truck Centre .
The Bill Norling award is in recognition of Mr Norling's work in his company 'Norling Engineering' and his dedication to the community and passion for training the next generation.
Chisholm director and CEO Stephen Varty acknowledged the hard work and dedication of all award finalists.
