Win places Hawks in top five

-

Drouin moved into the top five in A grade after a 13-goal win over Maffra on Saturday.

A grade: Drouin 52 defeated Maffra 39

Drouin turned up to secure the four points despite some changes to the line-up.

Deb Thomas returned to A grade and debutant Tilly Carroll got to show the Hawks what she can really do. It was exciting to see the future of the Hawks setting onto the court - the passing of the flag if you will.

Other highlights included Kylie Proctor showing how a Suncorp two-pointer is shot and Stacie Gardner being tossed around like she was in a washing machine - even hugging the goal post.

Everyone stepped on the court with purpose and it was exciting to watch Lucy McKellar attacking the ball and producing turnovers.

The team now have to work hard to get back into the top four and achieve their goal of finals. Bring on the second half of the season. Awards: Lucy McKellar and Stacie Gardiner. B grade: Drouin 33 lost to Maffra 46

After lots of discussion on what they want to achieve and work on, the B grade team stepped onto the court with direction and a goal.

It was the McArthur sisters headlining the court act. Kate Butler (nee McArthur) stretched her legs in centre, but it was Ali Mac, captain and all round hero, who stole the show. The crowd lost count of the number of intercepts from playing wing defence and back in goal keeper.

The Hawks tried different combinations in the attacking end and midcourt, including some great showings by Tess Mapleson and Liv Konstanty - but it was a hard day in the offensive ring. Jodie Proctor was their ringside coach, enabling the new combos to move where they needed.

Awards: Ali McArthur, Kate Butler and Jodie Proctor.

C grade: Drouin 25 lost to Maffra 59

If you could diagram the C grade game, it would start high, go down, then down some more but then pop back up.

This was the story of a great start and end of a match, but the Hawks losing their footing in the middle.

The defence end had no respite in the match with some very accurate goalers. Their quick shots and passes left many spectators amazed and impressed.

It was a good game to play, but unfortunately it didn’t go Drouin’s way.

There were some great defensive moves, drives up and down the court and some strong passes into the ring, but it wasn’t enough to capitalise and compete against the undefeated Maffra.

Awards: Alice McKellar, Grace Henderson and Georgia Lightowler.

17 and under: Drouin 33 defeated Maffra 26 The Hawks started out strong with the defensive end giving it everything with intercepts left, right and centre.

They showed that no ball was getting past them to go into the ring, and attacked every ball with confidence and determination.

The midcourt worked on their angles to the ball and coming forward. A highlight was beautiful passages from the centre pass into the shooters.

The goalers were on fire. Minimal missed shots and when they did miss, the rebounds were taken to put it up again.

Each quarter the girls were able to raise the bar higher with their skills and execution of the ball. They definitely did not disappoint and still continue to grow as a team.

Big game next week and the girls have developed well with their skills and teamwork. Traralgon had better watch out!

Awards: Tess Mapleson and Holly Cheyne.

15 and under: Drouin 14 lost to Maffra 63

It was a tough day out for the Hawks against a well oiled Maffra side.

The Drouin defence showed resilience and intensity in the ring, with Zoe Curtis shining through with some impressive intercepts and deflections. Mylie Stoll cleaned up all the scraps of the few missed shots with impressive rebounding skills.

The midcourt fired in the attacking end, with Jamison Thomas and Bella Tangipo building an amazing combination. Bella used her strength as a shooter to work the ball safely to the circle edge and feed into the shooters.

The shooters were up against some tough Maffra defence but persisted until they got ball in hand. Unfortunately, the Maffra defensive unit capitalised on some rebounds and loose ball.

Mia Trewin and Sienna Arbon built on their combination in the shooting circle and worked it around the circle. Mylie Stoll even made a debut in the shooting circle, scoring her first goal for the season.

The Little Hawkers played an amazing game this week.

The girls all played their roles and the combinations were strong.

Amber Hammond did an amazing job on a tall goal shooter. Her tight one on one defensive pressure was hard to beat.

Amelia Jarred and Fiona Nalder combined well in the ring and shot with accuracy. Amelia’s movement was amazing and created a lot of play for everyone else.

Awards: Amber Hammond and Amelia Jarred.
