Gleeson returns to debut stage

-

Having debuted on the West Gippsland Arts Centre stage, musical theatre star Simon Gleeson will finally make his return alongside wife Natalie O’Donnell on Thursday, August 18 at 11am.

Simon, who lived in Traralgon during his youth, played the role of Oliver in “Oliver” performed at the Warragul venue back in the late 80s.

“It holds a very special place,” Simon told the Gazette. “The first show I ever did was in Warragul. The first time ever on stage singing.”

Although his memories are vague, Simon says it was a pivotal moment which led to a career spanning the main stages of Australia and London’s West End.

“I don’t remember auditioning or much about it at all. But I do remember the feeling of loving it.”

The Helpmann Award winner returns in DayLight Entertainment show “Heart and Music” alongside Natalie O’Donnell who share not just the stage, but also a life and two children.

This intimate performance of songs and storytelling celebrates the music that has shaped both their careers and lives together.

There are classic songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein through to The Greatest Showman and some Billy Joel thrown in for good measure.

“It’s really eclectic,” Simon says of the program. “Obviously there’s a lot from our musical theatre repertoires. Some pop songs that are well known and we love. Songs from films as well that we’ve played a small part of or just enjoy. It deliberately covers a broad range of songs and genres of music that will appeal to a wide audience.”

Simon and Natalie met at their first show out of drama school. They haven’t shared the stage since.

Simon is best known for his acclaimed portrayal of Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables” and Natalie most recently delighted audiences as Donna in “Mamma Mia!” for which she received a Helpmann Award nomination.

Tickets are $30 for general, $27 for concession, $25 for members, $23 for groups and $15 for youth under 18.
