Garden Club

At the July meeting of Warragul Garden Club members enjoyed a wonderful presentation by Paul Fitzpatrick from Gardenacious.

His talk, “Gardens Grow People”, with slides of some beautiful gardens from all over the world, but mainly focussing on gardens in Sydney. There were many different types of gardens; some natural and some using science and lighting, and one on reclaimed land from a container site.

The main feature was Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden on Lavender Bay and how it evolved from a steep slope of disused railway land that was covered in lantana, rubbish and weeds. It is now a garden of sinuous shapes, bright daubs of colour and shafts of light. This garden has now been bequeathed to the public and is a hidden gem. It was a wonderful talk and enjoyed by all.

The flower exhibit bench was popular In July and included beautiful camellias, wattles, banksias and vegetables. Ralph Slaughter won the best exhibit of the month with a greenish yellow banksia flowerhead.

The next meeting is on Monday, August 22 and our guest speaker will be Steve Rowe from Rowe’s Nursery here in Warragul who will talk on “Best practice in making Compost”. The flower of the month for August is “Three Spring bulbs”, and the arrangement of the month is “Springtime”.

Members are busy getting seedlings, cuttings and plants ready for the popular spring plant sale at Eastern Park Community Garden on Monday, September 26. Keep this date free – it’s a good opportunity for the community to purchase a range of interesting plants to grow at home.
