Two wins for junior Hawks

-

Two of Drouin’s junior teams celebrated wins as the Hawks came up against Morwell on Saturday.

A grade: Drouin 19 lost to Morwell 54

Morwell were always going to be a difficult team to match on court.

With a slightly altered line up again, it was another opportunity for juniors to have a run on court.

The Hawks’ first quarter was good keeping Morwell to a impossibly low score. The second quarter wasn’t as good, and Morwell used this to their advantage.

In defence, Kym Diston and April Bethune worked hard to keep the ball in the Hawks’ hands, as well as Sara Russell. April also took some amazingly clean intercepts, forcing Morwell to switch up their movements.

Inspired by some great work from the defence who worked hard at picking off the ball, it was a battle of whole court defence and pressure. There were no easy passes for either team.

Award: Kym Diston.

B grade: Drouin 39 lost to Morwell 61

There was some magic movement on court shown by Ruby Pritchett. She is exciting to watch when her favourite part of the game is stealing the ball, leaving the crowd thinking how does she balance and not go offside?

Ali McArthur and Maddy Caddy’s facial expressions whilst trying to jump against Morwell’s tall shooter were another highlight! Both showed brilliant determination to at least touch the ball.

Chelsea De Riter again showed why it’s hard to decide which end she should be put. Deb Thomas was loving the run in midcourt and was always an option or a pest to the opposition. Kate Butler, Tess Mapleson and Georgia Henderson certainly helped out in the attacking end. Every week this team continue to work hard on court.

Awards: Ruby Pritchett and Deb Thomas.

C grade: Drouin 14 lost to Morwell 24

It was an extraordinarily low scoring game until the final quarter, when Morwell put their foot down.

But, with scores tied at six-all at quarter time, the game was on.

From one end of the court to the other, it was Drouin’s game. They just couldn’t keep the ball in their hands.

Morwell’s whole court pressure was intense as players from both teams had to work hard to get the ball where they wanted it.

It was another defender’s day out - for both teams - with an insane amount of turnovers and possession up and down the court.

Awards: Grace Henderson, Darcy Appleb and Kaylee Nalder.

17 and under: Drouin 34 defeated Morwell 30

In a strong game between two finals contenders, luckily the Hawks knew just how to get the all important four points.

Right from the first whistle, the girls were flying up and down the court. In defence, Kelly Mills went out hunting and was rewarded with plenty of turnovers, as was Alannah Jagoe.

Running the ball down the court like the wind were the all important midcourters, especially Holly Cheyne.

In attack, Tess Mapleson showed her steady hand and accuracy in goaling, not to be outshone by Kaylee Nalder. This team are looking forwards to the next few weeks.

Award: Holly Cheyne.

15 and under: Drouin 7 lost to Morwell 33

It was a big difference from last week to this week as the Hawks came up against Morwell at home.

Bella Tangipo and Mia Trewin worked worked tirelessly in the attacking circle to get possession, while Jamison Thomas and Zoe Curtis ran through the midcourt and got some impressive intercepts while there were out there.

Tayla Mitchelutti and Adah Heard worked hard against strong attackers in the defensive end, while Mylie Stoll and Sienna Arbon - the team’s twin towers - created plenty of turnovers in the defensive circle, forcing a lot of ball over the base line.

Unfortunately, their amazing efforts to get the ball back weren’t rewarded. Defensively, the girls were on fire and lots to work on for their last round with the basics.

Best on: Sienna Arbon.

13 and under: Drouin 17 defeated Morwell 16

Two wins on the board for the Baby Hawks, and they couldn’t be happier.

In a tough game that showed the resilience and determination of these players, the girls knew when to steady but also when to push and fight for what they wanted.

It was a real team effort to beat Morwell and the team was thrilled with the result. The game was especially indicative of the whole court pressure they had been working on. This included working on the timing of their drives.

Awards: Sophie Cassidy, Skye Norman and Chloe Walsh.
